<title>Married, almost 40, don&#x27;t want kids. &#x26;#160;WHY? Share your stories</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/6/10/740935/-Married-almost-40-don-t-want-kids-160-WHY-Share-your-stories</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have reached an age where all the people in my cohort--all the friends that I&#x27;ve grown up with--have had kids by now. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Except me.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In recent years I&#x27;ve heard my best female friends tell me about the lovely scent of a baby&#x27;s pate, the cute cooings of a child&#x27;s voice, and how their ovaries just react to these infantine stimuli, as though it were a natural fact.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Which it is.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So why don&#x27;t I feel this way as well?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>A sugar-free cookie: kindness vs torture</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/6/4/739032/-A-sugar-free-cookie-kindness-vs-torture</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;This topic might have been covered in other diaries; if so, I apologize, and will delete if necessary.
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;_&#x3C;/em&#x3E;_____&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;There&#x27;s a difference between how you might acquire real information, versus false information.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The former might not require much more than kindness, and an extended hand. &#x26;nbsp;The latter....Well, maybe torture is the way to go.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Capitalism is dead.</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/20/733688/-Capitalism-is-dead</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Once upon a time there was a vast swath of land that, aside from the Natives and other beings that lived in it, could be had for the taking.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This was the philosophy of those who had come to the Americas from Europe, and implemented Manifest Destiny, a philosophy which colonized what we now call the United States, on the backs of a hundred different indigenous tribes, and millions of people from Africa, brought here against their will.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The sort of thing which built up our country in the name of Manifest Destiny is no more; partly because we devised machines to replace the laborers/slaves, but also because we more or less have colonized every last bit of earth this continent had to offer. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yet we continue to hold onto that Manifest Destiny dream: that dream of the cowboy, wrangling his lariat; the dream of never-ending resources and the constant reaching for new ones. &#x26;nbsp;The legacy of capitalism, which is, and always had been, built on an unending stream of capital, and cruel human labor.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Newbie to newbie: cat diaries, Part 2</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/16/732357/-Newbie-to-newbie-cat-diaries-Part-2</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;If you are a newbie on here, I bet you are wondering why people get so freaked about about the pootie diaries, pro or con. &#x26;nbsp;I already discussed why the pootie diaries matter, in an earlier entry.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Well, he&#x27;s my two cents on the matter.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I, like you, have wondered why people here have violent feelings about the pootie diaries: there are those who will fight (and HR mean comments) to the end, versus those who feel they have to make a mean comment about pooties every single time a pootie diary is posted, and get HR&#x27;d to the nines.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;In the beginning, I hated the pootie diaries. &#x26;nbsp;But now? &#x26;nbsp;Well, I welcome them, now.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why is this?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Every time I find myself reacting strongly to a thing, I always stop and wonder why I feel so strongly about it; and I have come to the realization that whenever I feel such a way, it has more to do with me, than the topic at large.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>What the stars hold</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/15/731908/-What-the-stars-hold</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I was always, from my earliest days, what you would call an &#x22;underachiever&#x22;: never really applied myself at school, never really applied myself much to the type of the things that society in general considered important; simply because, I thought, that it wasn&#x27;t worth it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;However, after some years I realized that the reason why I didn&#x27;t apply myself to such things was because I didn&#x27;t think I had the wherewithal to achieve it; and somewhere down the line, I understood that if you don&#x27;t aim high, then you never achieve anything.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Newbie to newbie: why the cat diaries exist</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/6/728569/-Newbie-to-newbie-why-the-cat-diaries-exist</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Let me begin by saying that when I first joined the DKos I did not at all understand the whole cat diary thing. &#x26;nbsp;In fact in incensed me, enough to diary about it (if you care to go back in my diary history and check it out--I won&#x27;t provide the link to it). &#x26;nbsp;And it still is an obsession for me of sorts, clearly, since I&#x27;m choosing to diary about it again. &#x26;nbsp;I won&#x27;t stop to consider just why at the moment.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And yet, over my short tenure here, I&#x27;ve come to realize just what these pootie diaries are supposed to be about, and it makes me think about the particular culture that arises in any place, whether it&#x27;s in the office break room, in a classroom, at a family gathering, or at a blog site.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>We the peeps (with woozles!)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/3/16/709412/-We-the-peeps-with-woozles</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;For many years, I was utterly disengaged from politics--I read nothing in the news, I knew nothing, I didn&#x27;t want to know nothing. &#x26;nbsp;Because I&#x27;d come to the conclusion that the news couldn&#x27;t really tell me the truth, and the truth that could be had (for instance, at Democracy Now), was so hopeless and depressing that it wasn&#x27;t even worth perusing, because in the end, what could someone such as me do about it?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Pooties and R-word and other DK horrid things, oh my!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/1/30/685168/-Pooties-and-R-word-and-other-DK-horrid-things-oh-my</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;So I just want to talk about some of my observations that I&#x27;ve acquired ever since I joined the DK back in October or whenever it was (check my UID, wowsers that figure could maybe pay off the National Debt! LOL)&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;At any rate, allow me to spew some rather random and useless observations on the State of Daily Kos as it stands, which I will be the first to admit probably doesn&#x27;t have a lot of substance. &#x26;nbsp;But, considering the topics which I&#x27;m about to discuss, should be a moot point, really.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The Obama effect: encounter at the grocery store</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/8/657794/-The-Obama-effect-encounter-at-the-grocery-store</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here&#x27;s my own personal story of the Obama effect. &#x26;nbsp;It&#x27;s not quite as profound as the diaries written by &#x26;nbsp;JeffLieber and others, but still, it was an experience that gave me pause and left me quite mute.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Prop 8: &#x26;#160;&#x22;They&#x22; are Us</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/6/656367/-Prop-8-160-They-are-Us</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve been reading a lot of diaries here about how the &#x22;black vote&#x22; failed the gays by voting Yes on Proposition 8. &#x26;nbsp;Some of the diarists have been up in arms about it, and have vowed not to vote for &#x22;black interests&#x22; again because of it. &#x26;nbsp;And this does trouble me. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This particular ballot measure had been as of equal importance to me as getting Obama elected. &#x26;nbsp;It&#x27;s hard for me to articulate why, except that I have always believed in equal rights for all, and that there are several people whom I love dearly who would be (and now are) gravely affected by the passage of Proposition 8. &#x26;nbsp;Its passage tells me that perhaps I assume too much about people in California: I assume that most people in this state, like me, know that they have friends and loved ones who are gay, and to whom &#x22;gay&#x22; or bisexual is not a big deal at all, just another version of love which isn&#x27;t all that different from any sort of love any of us who are not gay experience, since I guess most of us tend to fall in love with human beings, right?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Well, maybe I might be wrong about assuming that people in California feel the way I do. &#x26;nbsp;And what it tells me is that what&#x27;s needed now is outreach, and connection.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>I&#x27;ve seen &#x22;real&#x22; America, and its name is Justice</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/31/641174/-I-ve-seen-real-America-and-its-name-is-Justice</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There have been a couple diaries here in the last few days thanking Kos and other people on this site who have made a difference. &#x26;nbsp;I&#x27;d just like to take the time to extend my own thanks to all of you here, because this site has really helped keep me sane over the last couple weeks.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;m one of the nail-biting Chicken Littles that people sometimes bemoan. &#x26;nbsp;My anxiety about this election has kept me awake at nights, wondering what I am going to do if Obama doesn&#x27;t win. But you guys at Daily Kos have really helped a lot, because I see the intelligence, the decency, the drive, and the kindness that so many of you show in your diaries and comments, so there are times that I think With folks such as these supporting Obama, how could he lose?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But perhaps the most striking thing for me about being here, and about this election in general, is that it has shown me that maybe there really are two Americas. &#x26;nbsp;However, the dividing line between them is not at all what people like Palin or Bachmann say it is. &#x26;nbsp;It has nothing to do with religion, or race, or sexual preference, or income, or education.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Why science research is not a &#x22;special interest&#x22;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/25/641895/-Why-science-research-is-not-a-special-interest</link>
<description>&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E; &#x22;Let us be the generation that reshapes our economy to compete in the digital age. Let&#x27;s set high standards for our schools and give them the resources they need to succeed. Let&#x27;s recruit a new army of teachers, and give them better pay and more support in exchange for more accountability. Let&#x27;s make college more affordable, and let&#x27;s invest in scientific research, and let&#x27;s lay down broadband lines through the heart of inner cities and rural towns all across America.&#x22;
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is a direct quotation from the &#x3C;em&#x3E;Obama for America&#x3C;/em&#x3E; website &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.barackobama.com/issues/technology/.&#x22;&#x3E;http://www.barackobama.com/...&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp;I begin this diary with this quote in order to underscore an important reason why we should care about science funding.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
