What should we do next? & Book Club

Friends are asking me, and I'm wondering too, where to put my righteous indignation when the mourning phase is over. One option is the local Democratic party, the local Democracy for America group, or MoveOn. Are there other options I'm missing? Also, what if we on dailykos started reading George Lakoff's book "Don't think of an Elephant" or some other book that would be helpful for our thinking and organizing in the days ahead? An online book discussion group to help us galvanize.

Lib/progressive southern cities

My husband and I are considering moving back to the south to be closer to our aging parents. I must confess I do this with some trepidation. I've lived in CA for 2 years. Granted, San Diego is pretty conservative, but it's not "southern baptist church on every corner" conservative. So, I ask, which cities in the south would be the most welcoming to liberals? Some background...I grew up S. Bapt. and have left the church and now consider myself more Buddhist than anything. I'm familiar with the fundy culture, but haven't been a part of it for several years. Sorry to the southerners out there who might think I'm stereotyping your region...As a former resident of AL, though, I know whereof I speak on some counts...

I'm trying to watch the Clinton speech on cspan.org, but I'm getting an QuickTime error "unsupported transport." I'm on a Mac. Any advice? Or is there anywhere else I can watch the speech?

Leaving the military-industrial complex

My husband has a great-paying, fairly secure job. Unfortunately, he is deeply enmeshed in the defense industry. He got on that job track early on and has been succeeding in it for over a decade. However, as a lefty against the current war, he has grown very uncomfortable working in the industry. It's getting to a point where we need to seriously consider getting out and pursuing something more in line with our values. My questions for you...Are there other lefties here who work in the defense industry? Are there any who have successfully left, and do you have any advice or insights?

Michael Moore cover of Entertainment Wkly

Michael Moore is the cover boy of the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly and inside is a nice Q&A. They ask the expected "hard" questions, but in my biased view, he comes off well. I didn't realize that after his Oscar speech, he had to stop going out in public because people were so rude to him. On the plus side, he recently had a Navy surgeon come up to him and say that during that speech, the surgeon was shouting at the TV in anger, and now he realizes MM was right. That exchange had to feel good for MM. Here's the site: http://www.ew.com, but the content is for subscribers only.

Another casualty of Iraq

Soldier kills his wife after returning from Iraq a "changed man." His father even mentions George Bush as being responsible for the change in him. Obviously, there's personal responsibility for his actions, but it does point to the immense emotional pressure these soldiers are under upon returning.

Send a note to Jim Lehrer

You've probably heard by now about the flap at NewsHour, when Lehrer got upset that a journalist expressed an opinion about corruption relating to Halliburton and Bechtel contracts. Lehrer's supposed problem with the remarks was that the journalist was expressing an opinion, but as Fairness and Accuracy In Reporting has discovered, other journos express opinions on the show. Also, Rummy has been on and falsely claimed things that Lehrer never corrected him on. So what gives, Lehrer? Anyway, FAIR has laid the whole thing out and asks us to send Lehrer a note:

I just gave Kerry $25...

Ardent Dean supporter here. Voted for him on Tuesday--proudly. Because of him, I'm actively working for change in my community and nation. I can't thank him enough for what he's done for our country. But I've moved past the anger stage about his stalled candidacy now, into the "Let's just beat Bush!" stage, so I just gave some money to Kerry, at the behest of moveon. Never thought I'd do it. Guess I'm growing up after all...

Goodbye to Clark from a Dean Supporter

I'm sorry to see General Clark leave the race. His was an important voice of reason, and I hope he continues to speak out about Bush's ill-advised foreign policy. You Clark supporters can be proud of the campaign he ran and proud of the substantive issues he focused on. Best wishes to his family as he returns to a private life.

Media: so screwed up

Remember when they always slammed Gore for being too stiff. Now, on the basis of ONE speech, apparently Dean (full disclosure: my candidate of choice; no close second) is too emotional and rowdy.

I have grown to hate the press during this, my first really active campaign.

Writer John Le Carre' comments on the war

From Entertainment Weekly's most recent issue:

(Le Carre' is a former spy for England.)

"I don't think there's anything worse that a leader can do than take us to war on the strength of lies. There were not reasons to go to war, there were excuses. So while the United States was wrapping itself in the flag and Blair was walking on the Atlantic, many of us felt here that he was wrong. I reject absolutely the idiotic charge that I'm anti-American. Quite the reverse. I believe in American ideals from Jefferson to Kennedy. But I also have nine American grandchildren I care about.

Al Franken Joins Liberal Radio Network

It's about time!

Satirical superstar and St. Louis Park native Al Franken has signed on as a prime player with Central Air, a new politically liberal radio network. Franken will host a daily talk show, his agent confirmed on Monday. When the New York-based network goes on the air later this year, his show is expected to run from noon to 3 p.m., going head-to-head in many markets with conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh.
What should Dems do before, during, after the SOTU?

You just KNOW that GWB will try some shiny new domestic program to distract the masses from his miserable failure of a presidency. The Mars thing. Or will it be the Moon? Or a spending program for AIDS or renewable energy which he will then refuse to fully fund. So, what can Democrats do before, during, or after the speech to make sure that the focus stays on the economy, the war, the lack of domestic programs, etc.?
