Maddow vs Zoolander

Rachel Maddow took out a full-page ad this week in the Boston Globe, telling Sen. Scott Brown, R-MA, to stop claiming that she is running against him for office.

Brown’s ploy is an obvious attempt to squeeze cash out of his chronically gullible base--and I wish Rachel luck fighting it. But, is telling the truth the best tactic?

My modest proposal: To reach those who believe only lies, simply lie.

Just put out a story...here...I’ll even do it for her:

Music: What was the “sound of the oughtie's”?

There WASN’T one, according to this diary over at Radio Lab.

Amazingly, this has been the only decade in this first century of recorded music that did NOT have it's own distinct sound. 2008 or 1998--they can't be told apart.

GOP’s Gay Agenda: Kill Baby Kill, UPDATE X2

Uganda is expected to soon legislate the death penalty for gays...and even if you are not gay, just saying "gay marriage is okay," can get you life in prison. Know a gay person and fail to turn him in? 3 years prison (see the bill here).

"Crazy Moslems!" you are thinking? Nope. Christians are implicated--specifically, an AMERICAN cult called The Family, whose members include "pro-family" adulterers Sen. John Ensign, Gov. Mark Sanford, and former Rep. Chip Pickering.

UPDATE X1: See related diary, US "Christians" exporting rabid homophobia to Africa.

Your favorite podcasts? (I heart Rachel!)

I finally learned how to subscribe. Turns out, not so hard.

Check out the iTunes podcast page. Why so few subscribers to Clear Channel programs? Could it be American (monopoly) radio s#cks?

Palin Book Tour - Suggestions?

Coming to a <del>book store</del> Walmart near you, Palin's book tour is posted below the fold (including a stop here in Columbus). Suggestions for flyers/posters/signs? How about:

"Palin/Cigna, 2012!" (saw this snark poster on Rachel)

"Palin/Prejean, 2012!" (kudos to kevvboy for this one)

W's face on Palin's bod/hairdoo. (Photo-shop volunteer?)

Or should we just stay home and ignore her?

Alternative to Dem caving; Gracie Amendments

Last night Rachel Maddow made a marvelous point: It is idiotic for Democrats to continually legitimize Republican lies by caving to them...most recently, caving to Rep. Joe Wilson's lie by proposing to add ADDITIONAL anti-immigrant verbiage to a health bill that ALREADY denies them coverage.

I offer a creative alternative to caving. My email to Rachel below the fold. (And I'm dead serious. This is not just snark.)

Birthers, Deathers, and Pelosi-ers

Everyone knows about "birthers" (a movement based on the incontrovertible fact that Jesus would never allow a non-white President), and "deathers" (this just in...Canadian socialized medicine extermination camps!!!).

But have you heard about the Pelosi-ers, who assert that Pelosi--NOT George Bush--was president for the past 8 years?

They do have some convincing evidence...

Remember the FIRST Bush scandal?

As I sit here staring expectantly at my Backwards Bush clock (15 days, 17 hours, 8 minutes, 21 seconds) I got to reminiscing, and recalled the FIRST Bush scandal (post election, anyway). Remember what it was?

Here's hint. It was a lie that is still being repeated, most recently by Babwa Wahwah in November on The View (about 4:30 on this Youtube), where she is talking about "$50,000 in intentional damage."

Re-Regulate Media Lying

Forget the fairness doctrine. Not even progressive broadcasters support it (despite the right-wing hand wringing). Thom Hartmann has warned it would be a double-edged sword, allowing right-wingers to demand equal time on AAR for GOP talking points. And as Stephanie Miller has said, what we need is fairness, not the fairness doctrine.

Ed Schultz says the root cause remedy is ownership—and a study has shown that independent stations have more balanced broadcasting. True. But last week Schultz too quickly dismissed a caller with a great idea: That media lying be regulated. And the idea is not new.

Breakin': Palin headin’ to hell

Did you catch Palin today, citing a New York Times article about Obama "pallin’ around with terrorists"--while the article actually said the exact opposite? Which brings to mind the Ninth Commandment:

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

Exodus 20:16

Somebody please warn Gov. Palin that her immortal soul is in peril. And if she dies this night without making amends, she is headed for eternal damnation. (More verses below.)

While the Repubs whine about Gwen Ifill...Guess who!

Republicans are waxing wrathful because Thursday's V.P. debate is being moderated by Gwen Ifill--author of a planned book, "The Breakthrough: Politics and Race in the Age of Obama." (Here's a N.Y. Time article on it.)

But guess who's moderating the third Presidential debate? Hints: His family has close ties to the Bush's; he is a Bush golf crony; and Bush appointed his brother ambassador to Australia, and Japan.

That was the message of cognitive linguist George Lakoff’s excellent diary yesterday. He advised Obama’s message crafters (e.g., us) to watch word association.

BAD: McCain is no MAVERICK.

BAD: McCain offers no MEANINGFUL CHANGE.
BETTER: McCain is a McFIBBER.

What’s wrong with the BADs?

Your mind associates words despite the "not"s and "no"s. (After all--your brain says--if there was no "Maverick" quality to McCain...why do I always hear "Maverick" and "McCain" together?) Ditto "MEANINGFUL CHANGE" and "TRUTH."

(Do you have any of your own BAD’s and BETTERs to offer? The BAD's are not hard to spot; but finding the right BETTER is a challenge.)

Anyone involved with Obama’s Ohio Stop Saturday?

I would like to ask the organizers to mention our local progressive radio station during the event warm-up.

It’s virtually the only progressive station in the state (smack in the center), and a little boost to our ratings right now can help keep us on the air--at least through the election.

From this diary I see that Obama recently kicked back at the media (finally a candidate who feels our anger). So maybe they will help.

I know this is last minute, which is why I am posting it to DKOS.

...Peter B. Collins, Donna Halper, Roger Libby, John Nichols , John Quinlan, Lee Rayburn, Brian Turany, and Cenk Uygur will be participating in a symposium August 1–3, 2008, at the Exhibition Hall of the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, WI.

Please come, or send a donation, at NonStopRadio.com

A week after an O'Reilly/Hannity/Savage fan murdered two at a Unitarian Unversalist church, it is fitting to take a hard look at American Radio--AND WHAT WE CAN DO ABOUT IT.

Too often we treat it like the weather--as if it is inevitable that 91% of radio is right-wing, and the 45% of Americans with no high-speed web access are to be surrendered to the big-drum-big-lies of Republican media.

But you CAN do something. I'm proof, as is the organizer of this event. My testimonial (and event details), below.

CNN Meat Puppet doesn't know what Swiftboating is!

I a new low for meat puppetry, CNN spokes model Rick Sanchez just now said Gen. Wesley Clark "swiftboated" McCain when Clark said getting shot down does not qualify someone to be President.

(Hey! Maybe it's true! Even the little words at the bottom of the screen said so!)

I guess Sanchez missed the day in main-stream-steno-pool class when they explained that SWIFTBOATING MEANS TELLING A LIE.

Got that Sanchez? Okay, let's check. Here's the quiz:

"Regarding Obama being the Anti-Christ..."

Yesterday someone posted a diary about how they responded to anti-Obama hate emails by asking to be taken off mailing lists.

I decided to respond with a more Obama-esque tac--responding politely, and raising the ante, just as Obama has done with McCain. My email is below.

Yes, it takes a little courage to stand up to flat out misinformation (and it would be so much easier to just ignore the emails), but if Obama can do it, it's the least I can do.

And better to "REPLY" one candle, than to "DELETE" the darkness.

(By the way, ever notice how right-wingers don't seem to be able to master the concept of "BCC". All the better for responding to everyone in the forwards!)

Thank You for Contributing to John McCain

Yes you have (and your contributions are why he may win).

Yes, if you gave to Hillary or Obama, you have already paid for ads on Clear Channel, Sinclair, and even Fox. And your contributed dollars will flood in that direction in the fall.

And the little 30-second ads you are paying for are maintaining a huge 24/7 barrage of flag-pin, Rev. Wright, global-warming-is-a-hoax, the-surge-worked, "what-recession?" right-wing propaganda.

Great work Democratic Party. It’s like paying to put your very own bumper sticker on the swiftboat that runs you down.

Thank God for Lieberman! (With action berries)

As a former Democrat, Lieberman was used to being held accountable by the media.

So he instinctively reacted when he heard McCain spout a total fabrication--one that McCain had been repeating UNCHALLENGED for weeks.

I’m talking about Lieberman’s whispered correction in McCain’s ear--which, as Rachel Maddow marvelled last week--seems to have legs.

What exquisite irony that turn-coat Lieberman has carried the virus of reality into the Republican camp—and they are coming down with it.

I’m sure by now some Rove-type has pulled Lieberman aside and said "Look, it doesn’t matter if it’s true. We’re Republicans." But the damage is done. It’s indelible (IMHO, because it’s funny).

In short, "Ehhhhhxcellent!!!"

(What possible actions am I leading up to? Go all the way to the bottom.)

My Two-Bumper-Sticker Pledge

I am buying two bumper stickers:

One for Obama, that will go on my car.

One for Hillary, that will go in my glove compartment.

I hereby pledge that if Hillary gets the nomination, that same day, her sticker will cover Obama’s.

Can I get a Hillary supporter out there to reciprocate?

Remember that the sniping between the two candidates is spitballs compared to the barrage they both face hourly from Fox, CNN, Sinclair, Clear Channel, 91% of talk radio, and the insipid American steno-pool excuse-for-media that relentlessly resonates to the right-wing drums.

And the fact is, whichever candidate loses, the loss will be much more due to Rush and O’Reilly than due to the other candidate.

A plea from Ohio: Don’t feed the Clear Channel Beast

I am asking both Obama and Hillary: Here in Ohio, please don’t feed the Clear Channel Beast.

We have one progressive station in the whole state: WVKO 1580 AM here in Columbus. If there have been any ads there for Democratic candidates, I have not heard them yet.

But there have already been Democratic Presidential ads on at least two local right-wing Clear Channel stations (that I know of).

Why? Why would you pay for your own swift boat? Why would you fund 30-second ads that then fund 24/7 Democrat-bashing?

Bush Budget is not even a lie--it's bullsh#t

And a Republican Senator is calling him on it.

In a letter to the White House last week, Republican Senator George Voinovich of Ohio pointed out that Bush’s so-called deficit reducing budget is off by "hundreds of billions, if not trillions, of dollars."

Voinovich said Bush’s 2009 budget proposal is based on keeping the Alternate Minimum Tax as is, and on cuts to Medicare physician reimbursements--neither of which is likely, and both of which Bush opposes.

How I Used Jotter's High-Impact Diaries Diary

Whenever I write to my local paper, I imagine I’m writing to those fur-capped Wicked-Witch-of-the-West palace guards.

After all, they must READ their own paper, and news is news, and despite sometimes running those Rameriz cartoons. and stone-age columnists, and twice endorsing His Petulancy for Prez, SURELY they can see the in-frigging-credible mess W has made.

And surely, if anyone ever threw a bucket of water on W, and he melted, there would be involuntary cheers throughout the newsroom/guardhouse.

But for now, they are the guards, and one must speak to them tactfully. So when the Editor of the Columbus Dispatch asked for suggestion for improving the paper, I took the diplomatic route, and decided to make good use of an under-appreciated resource here at DKOS--Jotter’s list of high-impact diaries.

(Maybe some of you could write similar letters to your local newspapers--or otherwise use Jotter's diaries to recruit others to read DKOS.)

Why radio matters - And what you can do

I just wrote a letter to the editor at the Columbus Dispatch.

I was responding to an ealier letter criticizing Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland for rejecting federal "abstinence until marriage" funds, and I replied that the complaining letter was framed wrong. He was not rejecting "abstinence until marriage" but "abstinence-ONLY," which has been an abject failure, resulting in record cases of STDs nationwide and the first rise in teenage births in 15 years.

How did I know those facts--including the "abstinence-only" frame correction? Normally I get such info here (at least, before DKOS became the all-Hillary-Obama-Edwards-all-the-time blog), but this time I knew because I heard it talked about last week on progressive radio.

Who deserves a holiday card?

No home addresses please; but who this year are you sending a holiday card to--to whom the rest of us may want to do the same?

I am sending one to our brand new progressive radio station here in Columbus: Manager, WVKO 1580 AM, 74 S. Fourth St., Columbus, OH 43215.

I stopped in to visit the station and saw a few cards taped to the wall, and thought it would be nice if they got another--just to let them know they have fans already.

Most of you are not in Central Ohio, so that would not make sense for you. But who nationally might need some holiday card encouragement from DKOS land? Your favorite Air American personality? A favorite progressive champion? Dick Cheney? Suggestions?

If you are looking for truly useful information on Fox head Roger Ailes (like where he hides his horcruxes) you won’t find it in this morning's Columbus Dispatch interview.

But interviews with Ailes are rare (apparently he granted this interview to garner interest in his Fox Business Network, launching Monday), so let’s study it for any insights we may garner.

91% of radio is right-wing

The Center for American Progress released a 35-page report in June, full of facts, charts, and statistics incontrovertibly demonstrating:

91% of commercial talk radio is right-wing.

Right-wing bias is directly tied to ownership; and mega-ownership = mega bias.

These are two sharp arrows in the quiver for those in D.C. arguing for ownership rules.

BUT I WANT ANOTHER STUDY for those of us in the trenches (such as at OhioMajorityRadio.com ) appealing to local station owners to carry progressive programs.

Sure, we can tell them about the unfairness--but they don’t care.

What WE need is a study that proves something else we all know; that PROGRESSIVE RADIO KICKS ASS!

UPDATE: Some great links from the comments:

Stephanie Miller: Not Fairness Doctrine--just fairness.

If you missed Stephanie on Hannity and Colmes Thursday night, here’s the beginning of the best part:

KAREN HANRETTY (filling in for Hannity): What does this exactly do for the Democratic Party as you're heading into the next election, that the liberal base is out there trying to not only stifle free speech but once again just doesn't understand the basics of the free market system?

STEPHANIE MILLER: Well, let me explain the free market system to you, Karen. My show has about -- oh, I'd say -- triple to quadruple that the right-wing show that's in
my time slot. Same thing with Ed Schultz, with Randi Rhodes, with Tom...

Stephanie fights back more, below.

Countdown to Restoration Day

I once worked at a company where one department held an annual celebration marking the departure of a legendry odious manager. They had cake, balloons, and banner that said something like "Larry is Still Gone Day!"

I predict a new unofficial national holiday, beginning January 21, 2009--the day W departs for Paraguay, Dubai, or Texas.

It might be called:

Worst President Ever (WPE) Day.

Anti-Presidents Day.

Bush is Gone (BIG) Day.

Or, Restoration Day.

The last is nice, marking the restoration of (for a start):

Habeas Corpus--our 800-year-old keystone of English law.

General Washington’s 200+ year-old admonition against torture.

The words "protect our home planet" to the NASA mission statement.

What might the holiday be called? What should be restored first? And how will you celebrate?

Can you give Connie Schultz examples of DKOS original reporting?

Dear Connie Schultz:

I know it is premature to comment on your new book, "And His Lovely Wife," (about campaigning with your husband, Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio). It won’t be published until June 19--but this morning I read an article on it by Joe Hallet in the Columbus Dispatch where Hallet says:

On the matter of political blogs, Schultz and I were in lockstep. Their importance is overblown and their readership, although growing, still is a fraction of those readers who rely on newspapers to get their politics.

Little original reporting comes from political blogs.

(Gang - below the fold I give some examples of DKOS original reporting. Can you add some?)

Rally ‘round our Stephanie

MSNBC has been trying different hosts in Imus’s slot (last week--troglodyte Michael Smerconish). Tomorrow it’s OUR turn, with Stephanie Miller, Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday (April 30, May 1-2) 6-9 a.m.

Rumors are that Stephanie has an inside track to win the spot. Help make it come true. Please:

Email MSNBC and say thanks, at (viewerservices@msnbc.com).

Set your TIVO or other DVR to record the three shows, to increase her ratings. (Yes, TIVO random samples our viewing.) And give it 3 thumbs up on your TIVO.

Pass this info on!

(This was well diaried here, but I think it worth repeating. Also, below the fold I salute her two "mooks"--who we sometimes neglect.)

"I was not surprised..."

It is driving me nuts each time I hear Gonzales say "I was not surprised" some U.S. Attorney was dismissed--and this meme reeks of Luntz, if not of outright Rovian drive-by smear-ege.

Repeatedly, Gonzales says, he was not involved, he didn’t see the facts, he doesn’t know who fingered them, he can’t remember exactly when the tooth fairy left the list under his pillow...BUT when it comes to the alledged incompetence of dismissed U.S. Attorney X, Y or Z, "I was not surprised."

Implication: Well, I may not know why, but EVERYONE knows why. He/she was so bad, it was general knowledge. (Nudge nudge wink wink.)

Really, Fredo? Then please explain the following (I yell at the radio--hoping some Senator can hear me):

Please Help Us Mr. Romney

Dear Mitt Romney:

Only you can help us. And it would only take a phone call. Let me explain our problem.

Here in the town that gave Jesse Owens to the world, to hear Michael Savage call black kids "ghetto slime" on local radio is unacceptable.

And for him to call Hispanics "leaf blowers" and claim they are waging "war on the white race" is something we don’t want our kids to hear.

And here, where we have had a gay city council member we all respect, to hear Savage tell a gay caller to "get AIDS and die" is considered far more obscene than flashing a breast.

That was my testimony at the FCC town hall meeting in Columbus last week.

Progressive Radio in Ohio - Any Advertisers?

We lost the next-to-last progressive radio station in ALL of Ohio Jan 19 when Clear Channel terminated WTPG (Stephanie, Maddow, Franken, etc.) and replaced it with Ingraham, Savage, etc., under the new call letters (we’re not making this up) WYTS.

Now all we have are Rush, Rush-lite (Beck), Rush Dumb (Hannity), Rushette (Ingraham), Rush Crazy (Savage), and on and on.

One last ask for signatures (43 zip esp., all welcome)

AND THANKS ROCKO & MIKE STARK! Your "show advertisers the radio vileness" idea is great! I posted a link to your diary at our petition’s linked Yahoo Group last night.

We may use your ideas after Clear Channel throws our petition in our face tomorrow, and flips our WTPG Stephanie-Al-Rachel station to WYTS Michael Savage and Laura Ingraham on Tuesday.

In fact, I have already been showing the vileness to some. I spent much of yesterday on High St., Columbus, handing out "come sign our on-line petition" flyers, and making this spiel to all who would listen (and BLUSHING while I did it--it’s hard to repeat this stuff!).
Anybody Ever Heard of Conservative Underground?

They’re freeping our petition over at OhioMajorityRadio.com

It’s not a big attack, but our tech has a day job, AND a sick kid, so his petition housekeeping may get behind..

And, it’s no biggee, but, almost all the comments have been pretty passionately in our favor. Seeing troll crap spoils the neighborhood.

(BTW, if you want stop over and sign, you would at least dilute the crap. But PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE TROLLS by commenting on their comments. It makes your comment look a little weird when the troll comment you are referring too is gone. We have some like that already. And I will look weird if you get there and our tech guy has already scrubbed it clean...but just in case it’s a while before he gets to it...)

Where NOT to Work if You are Gay

The Human Rights Campaign has released it’s "Buying for Equality 2007" ratings.

It’s a guide we GLBTs can use when job hunting. (And this is not trifling issue. In 33 states, you can still be fired for being gay; in 43 states, for being transgendered.)

Also, it’s a guide we can ALL consult to decide where to take our business. (No big surprise--among low scorers are also environment and labor abusers, although that criteria was not used here.)

And it’s not like you have to deprive yourself to "shop pink." On a scale of 0-100, most companies scored Green (score 80-100), fewer Yellow (46-79), and relatively few scored Red (0-45). So, if you give up Dominos (score 45), you can still have your DiGiorno (Kraft foods, score 100).
In fact, out of 446 companies HRC rated, 138 scored 100, and only 2 scored 0.

Wanna guess which two companies rated 0? Hint: One is a company you already boycott if global warming matters to you. Answers (and the red list) below the fold

DKOS Holiday Shopping Guide

Where to shop? What to buy?

I know to start with Buy Blue. Some of my own gift ideas below the fold...but I always find DKOSers have better ideas than my own.

Adopt a Newspaper, Cultivate Reporters

We are totally outgunned by the right-wing noise machine. In our quiver there are arrows I hope you already use to spread info found on DKOS:

LTEs

Email friends

Talk it up among friends and families

Call in to radio shows

Cross post to other blogs

Donate to Media Matters, etc.

I’d like to suggest an easy one you may not have thought of: Pick a newspaper (especially your local paper) and cultivate some reporters by emailing them news tips you find on KOS and other blogs.

Sell my diary, Kos!

In the Sunday paper this morning I noticed that not a single feature was as interesting or insightful as diaries I see on DKOS every day. (George Will vs Georgia10? NO CONTEST!!!) And I thought: What a shame the general public (including those without PCs) is missing what we have here.

And then an idea: How about if Kos marketed a weekly "Best of DKOS Diaries" to the general press?

Yes, what we post is automatically NOT copyrighted (surprised? read the not-so-small print), and (I assume) any newspaper could publish what they want--free. So “sell” is not the right word. What I really mean is “market” for free. So why do it?

To bring more useful info to the public. (A counter to the right-wing spin-monster media machine.)

To publicize DKOS. (And more readers = more $ for ads, I assume.)

Is it problematic? Yes. But hear me out.

Use Thanksgiving to Spread the Word

Thanksgiving looms, and many of us are preparing to get into our Honda Civic hybrids and head off to eat turkey with the proverbial family back home--aka the 31% of America that still polls for Bush.

Hey! Don’t look at it as a time-machine ride back to an Orwellian alternate-universe Christo-Stalinist Hooterville.

Look at it as an opportunity to talk to people who (having watched nothing but Fox for the last few decades) might actually be appreciative when you break the news about Abramoff, global warming, that Bush is not universally loved around the globe, and that Cheney shot a “dear friend” in the face and left him bleeding in the dirt while he drove off with his entourage of personal government ambulances to a fine dining soiree back at the estate.

On the other hand...might your attempts at education turn the holiday gathering into your very own family version of “Michael Richards Night at the Apollo”? Could happen (again). But let’s be optimistic. Maybe THIS year...

Am I too hideous to talk about?

Earlier there was a diary asking if Michael Savage is gay.

The diarist was immediately inundated with angry comments, and for that reason (I assume) deleted the diary.

Why? Is homosexuality so hideous we can’t discuss whether someone is gay?

First-100-Hours Item: Stop the RPG Human Sacrifice

As of September, 170 U.S. troops died from rocket propelled grenade (RPG) attacks. As reported by NBC news, an Israeli system called Trophy already exists, and could be saving American lives by next year.

But a Pentagon "technical team" evaluating the system awarded a $70 million contract for an anti-RPG system to Raytheon, even though THE RAYTHEON SYSTEM WON'T BE READY BEFORE 2011 AT THE SOONEST.

Any corruption there? Gosh. You mean because the "technical team" was well staffed WITH RAYTHEON EMPLOYEES?

The team would not even allow a "shoot-off" evaluation comparing Trophy to Raytheon's Quick Kill, because it would not be "fair" to Raytheon!

This is beyond corruption. This is murder.

Email I received yesterday:

Did you vote on a PROVISIONAL BALLOT? If you did and you live in the 15th Congressional District and voted for Mary Jo Kilroy, the Kilroy campaign needs to hear from you. Mary Jo wants to know the circumstances that lead you to vote on at Provisional Ballot? This race is not over, the vote counting continues with a large number of Absentee and Provisional Ballots to count. The small lead for Pryce has narrowed and we think when ever vote is counted Mary Jo Kilroy will be heading to Congress. To contact the campaign call 614-267-2006. For more on the race go to the Kilroy web site

Related news: Kilroy's Veteran's Day Rally, this morning, at 11 a.m., here in Columbus:

Rescue the FCC policy against news falsification

IMHO, the Fairness Doctrine can wait. First, rescue the FCC policy that says news providers should not purposely lie. Yes, the policy already exists, but Fox, and the Florida Court of Appeals effectively smothered it in 2003.

How it happened: In 1997, two Fox reporters uncovered unsavory facts about a BHG/Monsanto/dairy scandal in Florida, but were ordered by Fox to falsify their news reports. The reporters used that FCC policy to sue Fox. And in 2003, they lost. The "Florida Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with an assertion by FOX News that there is no rule against distorting or falsifying the news in the United States". Their logic: A "policy" is not a rule. So it's okay to lie and call it news.

Don't forget STATE BOARDS OF EDUCATION elections!

The Vote Science web site has voting recommendations for:

OHIO. Names here. Districts 2, 3, 4, 7 & 8 are open seats, and are mapped to counties here. (Names with counties are below the fold.)

FLORIDA. Names here. Districts: 1 (Citrus & Escambia Counties), 3 & 5 (Volusia County) are open seats.

KANSAS. Names here. Districts 1, 3, 5, 7, & 9 are open seats, and are mapped to counties here.

The Flying Spaghetti Monster says:
These races are listed on the ballot without party affiliation, so it is important to know candidates by name. And forward this to your friends--or FACE MY ETERNAL WRATH!

Latest GOP Smear: She worked with REPUBLICANS!!!

This morning I woke up to my partner yelling, "My God! Jennifer Brunner's a Republican?!!! Am I losing my mind?!!!" He's standing over my bed pointing to this picture in the Columbus Dispatch. It's a pix from a TV ad from Brunner's opponent, Republican Greg Brunner.

"But didn't we meet her at the Stonewall DEMOCRATS candidates night?!!!"

Not only that, but she is running to replace notorious REPUBLICAN Ohio Secretary of State Kenneth Blackwell. In the never-never land of "corruption central" (aka Ohio), where Blackwell is running for governor as a BLACK WHITE SURPREMICIST, everything is possible...but this is too much!

Why I'm NOT boycotting Victoria's Secret

Here's a rumor around flying Ohio today (I got it in two different emails):

The Republicans have chosen the Mary Jo Kilroy, Zach Space and Bob Shamansky races as their National GOTV Firewall efforts.

Matt Kellner, Bush/Cheney 2004 Ohio GOTV Director and now Les Wexner's Political Director, was overheard telling insiders last night that the GOP has rented 3000 rooms in the Central Ohio Area next week for GOTV! Hill Staffers and other GOP political operatives will be flying into Central Ohio from all over the country to participate. Debra Pryce is footing part of the bill as a field organization/GOTV expense.

Whether it's true or not, the Wexner/Pryce connection is real enough.

Wexner heads Victoria's Secret and Limited Brands. And his latest connection with Rep. Deborah Pryce (OH-15) was back on Sept. 29 when he hosted an invitation-only fund-raiser for Pryce, attended by Bush, which raised $650,000.

Here's a telephoto of Bush sneaking into Columbus for the Pryce fund-raiser.

Help expose a HUGE dirty little secret

The BIGGEST dirty little secret in U.S. politics:

Republicans say "we love the troops" but vote "screw `em."

From armor, to benefits, the GOP treats the military like their personal "hired help," as Hunter's diary showed yesterday with the most revealing numbers I have seen.

But we need to GET THE WORD OUT. I already sent the enclosed letter to multiple editors and reporters at the Columbus Dispatch, Cincinnati Enquirer, and Cleveland Plain Dealer. Maybe some of you can use this letter as a model to do the same for your local newspapers, especially to any reporters you know of who care about the troops, or are veterans themselves.
