<title>Bernie Fails Another of His Own Purity Tests</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/2/6/1480932/-Bernie-Fails-Another-of-His-Own-Purity-Tests</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;It has been an interesting election season.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; I have no doubt Hillary is a stronger candidate for the wringer Bernie has put her through. Their dialogue helps our party as it insists that the&#xA0;media cover left-wing politics; it helps our side to organize and get to know each other; and it reminds the country that the right-wing isn&#x27;t the only show in town in the marketplace of ideas.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;But it&#x27;s important to take stock of where our strategy implications lead. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;A central focus of Bernie&#x27;s campaign has been the&#x3C;em&#x3E; corrupting nature of money in politics &#x3C;/em&#x3E;-- an idea that many of his supporters have gladly taken up to impugn the integrity of Hillary Clinton. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;And even President Obama.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;Unfortunately that strategy may have taken a direct hit yesterday.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Via &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.cnn.com/2016/02/05/politics/sanders-democratic-fundraisers/&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;CNN&#x3C;/a&#x3E;:&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;
&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;In recent years, Sanders has been billed as one of the hosts for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee&#x27;s retreats for the &#x22;Majority Trust&#x22; -- an elite group of top donors who give more than $30,000 per year -- at Martha&#x27;s Vineyard in the summer and Palm Beach, Florida, in the winter. CNN has obtained invitations that listed Sanders as a host for at least one Majority Trust event in each year since 2011.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The retreats are typically attended by 100 or more donors who have either contributed the annual legal maximum of $33,400 to the DSCC, raised more than $100,000 for the party or both.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;

&#x3C;figure class=&#x22;image-captioned width-xl align-right&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img alt=&#x22;image1.PNG&#x22; class=&#x22;width-xl&#x22; src=&#x22;http://images.dailykos.com/images/205767/large/image1.PNG?1454783898&#x22; title=&#x22;image1.PNG&#x22;&#x3E;
&#x3C;figcaption&#x3E;&#x3C;/figcaption&#x3E;
&#x3C;/figure&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;When Bernie takes the stage we are used to hearing him rail about money in politics, amid innuendos about campaigns being corrupted by financial sector. But what is unusual...?&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Bernie has spent years glad-handing those same financial executives&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; at lavish retreats in south Florida.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;By CNN&#x27;s estimate, &#x3C;strong&#x3E;Bernie helped raised $20-50 million from maxed out donors, many from the financial sector, and all from corporate America&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;, for both himself and Democratic groups.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;Not only did he go to the event every year with his wife Jane Sanders, it&#x27;s also been noted that &#x3C;strong&#x3E;Bernie&#xA0;benefited&#xA0;from Vermont&#x27;s Democratic Party&#xA0;connections to Goldman, Citi, and JPMorgan.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; These monies flowed to his senatorial campaign, apparently without question or rejection.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;To make matters even stickier, it&#x27;s pretty well known that the Democratic National Committee raises millions from Wall St every election cycle. And of course -- the DNC is the sanctioning party of every debate. And the Democratic Party is the banner under which Bernie currently seeks nomination.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;Why has Bernie instituted a purity test that not only implies corruption for the DNC, Pres. Obama, and Hillary Clinton... but also himself?&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;Or is this another &#x22;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_true_Scotsman&#x22; target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; title=&#x22;&#x22;&#x3E;no true Scotsman&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x22; like the progressive purity test, in which no matter how obvious the connections, only Bernie is the uncorrupted standard bearer?&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;It&#x27;s a strange tact to take. And it may be unraveling before our eyes.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;If Hillary is suspect for raising millions from Wall St...&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;If Obama is suspect for raising millions from Wall St...&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;If&#x3C;strong&#x3E; &#x3C;/strong&#x3E;the DNC is suspect for raising millions from Wall St...&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;It only stands to reason that Bernie is suspect for raising millions from Wall St. &#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;According to&#xA0;HIS OWN RHETORIC.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;I don&#x27;t want to impugn anyone&#x27;s integrity. I know, for example, that&#xA0;Obama worked to cap bank CEO pay, and institute vital stress tests to prevent the stranglehold the banks held on our economy before the recession. I will defend our President every day because he invested in WORKERS immediately upon taking office, with a mass stimulus that worked to stabilize the US &#x2014;&#xA0;even while major socialist parties in Europe lost out to their right-wing and corporate demands for austerity. Their economies are STILL reeling!&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;Of course the US is one of the only economies&#xA0;growing today, and our unemployment just hit a new post-recession low at 5%. (A fact ballyhooed by the GOP.. And Sen. Sanders.)&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;Will we impugn Obama&#x2019;s&#xA0;integrity when our financial system was stabilized? Will we impugn&#xA0;Clinton&#x27;s integrity when she has voted for unions, for children, for workers, and &#x3C;em&#x3E;against &#x3C;/em&#x3E;special interests? Are our ideas not noble enough for the purity tests Sanders insists on?&#xA0;&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;The innuendos are not only dangerous because they make a mockery of the progress we&#x2019;ve made as a party &#x2014;&#xA0;they also by default implicate Sanders himself&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;, as he has only been too happy to fly to Florida every year for those lavish corporate retreats.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;strong&#x3E;&#x3C;span&#x3E;And finally, if Clinton is to release transcripts of speeches given as a private citizen, I think it&#x27;s only fair to insist that Sanders release speeches given to Wall St as a sitting Senator.&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;br&#x3E;
&#x3C;span&#x3E;It&#x2019;s sometimes a danger, when throwing everyone under the bus, that a tire pops the curb and catches you too!&#x3C;/span&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>This Time, I&#x27;m With Her!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2016/1/25/1475158/-This-Time-I-m-With-Her</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Hello.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; I haven&#x27;t visited here in a while, but I wanted to stop by and share why I am supporting and campaigning for Hillary Clinton for President. In 2008 I was for Obama, and I was very skeptical of Clinton. I eventually campaigned for Obama all-out -- and against her just as hard. I was a college student, making phone calls and donating anything I could. It was a fun campaign. And it paid off in the sense that we elected the first black President - an advocate for the struggling - an advocate for LGBT - for college students - for the poor and middle class in the face of the recession - and someone who wasn&#x27;t going to let another term go by without healthcare reform. I don&#x27;t regret this at all. We made a lot of progress.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But I do regret not giving Clinton a closer look in 2008. My mother, who doesn&#x27;t follow politics AT ALL, was exhuberant to vote for Hillary, only to be let down when she didn&#x27;t get the nomination.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;She&#x27;ll be in the cabinet,&#x22; I said to console her. &#x22;Maybe even VP.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Fast forward so many years, and Obama seems to be having his own regrets about that race. In the latest Politico piece, he all but endorses Clinton as heir apparent to the movement he helped build.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And you know what? I&#x27;m with him again, and I&#x27;m with her, too.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I feel that Hillary is the most likely to get a Democratic agenda of any kind on the table. And her agenda is fair, wide-ranging, and good. Equal pay for women. Pre-k education. Research to cure Alzheimer&#x27;s. Raising incomes and creating more properity. College affordability.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And LGBT rights. People keep posting this quote from Hillary that she believed marriage was between a man and a woman. She did. So did Obama. As did Biden. (And by the way, so did Bernie Sanders, at least for his state of Vermont.) Privately, I doubt they ever believed that. But politics is the art of the possible. And the American PEOPLE only made gay rights front and center over the past few years. It&#x27;s disinengous to say she wouldn&#x27;t be an LGBT advocate because of this position she once held. Because look at how far Obama has gone -- he who once said his Christian values compelled him to view marriage as a union between man and woman -- now the greatest advocate for LGBT in the White House in HISTORY!&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;People should realize on that issue, the entire country seemed to be against gays until the 1990s, when it began to soften a bit. I know she will be an advocate for us, because we have been an advocate for her. And we aren&#x27;t going back on this issue. Only forward.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I believe electability is on her side, but also governance. She would be able to get bills passed practically.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Mr. Sanders talks a big game, but the fact is he doesn&#x27;t have a single Senator&#x27;s endorsement - nor, amazingly, even a single representative from the Vermont delegation. He faces an extremely uphill battle of even winning the nomination, much less the presidency. But if he did win, there would be slim chance to pass anything. I don&#x27;t see him working well with the other side, as compromise for him seems to be the same kryptonite that it is with others on the right side of the spectrum.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I think the answer this year is giving Clinton another look. She would be our first female president, an advocate for women and families, for black people, gay people, the disenfranchised. She&#x27;s not a single-issue politician (be it immigration from Trump, or income inequality from Sanders). This would be a clear distinction.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I really hope you don&#x27;t neglect giving her a chance in the rush to the bandwagon Bernie is steering. I know I will campaign this year just as hard for her, as I want my mom to be able to finally be able to cast her vote for Hillary. And I hope you&#x27;ll join her.&#xA0;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Thanks for reading. :)&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>I have social anxiety and talking to people terrifies me.</title>

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yet... Here&#x27;s what I&#x27;ve done this morning:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://i.imgur.com/kyiLg.png&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img src=&#x22;http://i.imgur.com/kyiLg.png&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Believe me, the first call was not that easy for me.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;But guess what? Every single call after the first has been easier and easier.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;You&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; have to step up and &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://calls.barackobama.com&#x22;&#x3E;make some calls&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. If I can do this, you most certainly can. If all of us made 5 calls today, we could ensure good turn-out in key areas.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>How many calls have you made?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2012/11/5/1155964/-How-many-calls-have-you-made</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x27;s really up to us now. And I am resurrecting my old dkos account to remind everyone that action is far better than words!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The polls, the chatter, the blogs -- the words! -- aren&#x27;t going to be enough tomorrow. We need people on the ground, votes in the bank!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;We need YOU.&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://call.barackobama.com/&#x22;&#x3E;Make some calls at Obama&#x27;s campaign site.&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;So please, call some voters today. It&#x27;s remarkably easy to do. People are not rude; it isn&#x27;t nearly as bad as you think; &#x26;nbsp;you aren&#x27;t even calling Romney or undecided voters. You call people like &#x3C;strong&#x3E;us&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; and remind committed Democrats to vote -- and to bring a friend!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;How many calls can you make today?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I have not written a diary or a comment since 2011. I didn&#x27;t succumb to apathy; I was only using different outlets for political expression.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;But check my UID. I&#x27;ve been here for a while! I think today is a momentous time for the 2012 campaign, and I believe I should speak up where ever I can.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;My last diary was about healthcare reform, and the GOP&#x27;s attempt to repeal it in 2011. They tried again in 2012. And today, our work has been vindicated (again). We need to show our support for President Obama NOW and not wait for the next knock-down drag-out on healthcare. I am asking that you donate to the President&#x27;s 2012 campaign so they can prepare for the inevitable attacks.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Get Specific: New District by District Analysis of HCR Repeal</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/1/18/937288/-Get-Specific-New-District-by-District-Analysis-of-HCR-Repeal</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;While it looks likely for the House vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, there&#x27;s no reason not to fight it. As Bill Frist eloquently put, urging Republicans to drop repeal, this is &#x22;the law of the land.&#x22; (It&#x27;s rare we can quote a Republican in support here; please excuse me that interference.) And now, we need to work to uphold the law.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;To that end, House Democrats have crafted an &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://democrats.energycommerce.house.gov/index.php?q=news%2Fimpact-of-repealing-health-care-reform&#x22;&#x3E;awesome tool&#x3C;/a&#x3E; that shows the effects of repeal in real numbers, for each district. As an example, if the bill were repealed, my district would see &#x3C;strong&#x3E;90,000&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; more uninsured individuals, &#x3C;strong&#x3E;119,000&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; seniors without preventative services, and a whopping &#x3C;strong&#x3E;121,000-317,000&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; people denied healthcare because of pre-existing conditions.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Sharron Angle Cries Victim</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/1/12/935740/-Sharron-Angle-Cries-Victim</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Sharron Angle released a statement late last night in response to the Tucson murders. Like Sarah Palin&#x27;s statement, hers carries an implicit threat and more than a little cognitive dissonance. While violent rhetoric had &#x3C;em&#x3E;nothing&#x3C;/em&#x3E; to do with this tragedy, she says, it is &#x22;irresponsible&#x22; to criticize her, Sarah Palin, or the Tea Party for their rhetoric. But she goes a step further, saying it is &#x22;dangerous and ignorant&#x22; and &#x22;puts [them] in danger.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Full statement below.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Congressional Protection</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/1/8/934518/-Congressional-Protection</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The calls to give up violent rhetoric are necessary, if not long overdue. But today&#x27;s tragedy was entirely preventable for another reason.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why, after almost &#x3C;em&#x3E;two years&#x3C;/em&#x3E; of hateful language (anti-American, terrorist sympathizer, tyrant, socialist, extremist, racist -- you name the hate, I&#x27;ll name the date it was uttered); why, after people literally brought guns to political events; after offices were shot up, vandalized, doors broken down, swastikas painted, Congressmen spit on, called the N-word --&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why, why, why hasn&#x27;t someone stepped up and offered more protection for our Congresspeople? The Secret Service needs to extend 24/7 protection to all Congress members. Americans will pay the extra cost, for the benefit of a safe environment in which constituents can meet their representatives -- without fear.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Haley Barbour, Civil Rights Legend</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/12/31/932596/-Haley-Barbour-Civil-Rights-Legend</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yes. Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi may have said some &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1210/Barbour_clarifies_Citizens_councils_indefensible.html?showall#&#x22;&#x3E;stupid things&#x3C;/a&#x3E; lately. He may have done some &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/2010/12/barbour-has-a-history-of-citizens-council-trouble/&#x22;&#x3E;really stupid things&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. But if you watched Rachel Maddow last night, you&#x27;re probably aware that Haley has a Heart. In fact, he&#x27;s now a civil rights legend, and all his past mistakes have been forgiven. Ahem.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;That&#x27;s because Haley Barbour has extended clemency to the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scott_sisters&#x22;&#x3E;Scott Sisters&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, black sisters arrested in 1993 for armed robbery that netted them $11. Though there have been calls for their release for the past decade, Haley decided now was the time. Imagine that!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Barbour&#x27;s Been Here Before: Haley&#x27;s History with CCC</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/12/21/930723/-Barbour-s-Been-Here-Before-Haley-s-History-with-CCC</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;Their vehicle, called the &#x26;lsquo;Citizens Council,&#x26;rsquo; is totally indefensible, as is segregation.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is from Haley Barbour&#x27;s &#x27;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/1210/Barbour_clarifies_Citizens_councils_indefensible.html?showall#&#x22;&#x3E;clarification&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x27; of his recent whitewashing of Yazoo City&#x27;s racial history.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But, did you know that Haley Barbour was involved in the same kind of filth only seven years ago?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The original newspaper article is no longer available online from the Clarion-Ledger. Luckily it was cached at &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/2010/12/barbour-has-a-history-of-citizens-council-trouble/&#x22;&#x3E;ThinkProgress&#x3C;/a&#x3E;:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Republican gubernatorial nominee Haley Barbour says he will not ask for his picture to be removed from the national Web site of the Council of Conservative Citizens.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The site for the St. Louis-based group features Confederate flags and has links to articles such as &#x22;In defense of racism&#x22; and offers books on why the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. doesn&#x26;rsquo;t deserve a national holiday and why Germany should be cleared of the &#x22;blood libel of the &#x26;lsquo;Holocaust.&#x22;&#x26;lsquo;

<title>Psst -- Obama&#x27;s Alright</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/12/20/930453/-Psst-Obama-s-Alright</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Lame-duck Congress turned things around. Some good, some bad. All surprising...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Obama mid-term bashing pay off?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Forty-eight percent of people questioned in the poll say they approve of the job Obama&#x27;s doing in the White House, with an equal amount saying they disapprove of how he&#x27;s handling his duties.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;As for the liberal exodus,&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The president&#x27;s approval rating among self-described liberals dropped from 79 percent in November to 72 percent [in December].
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Ouch! I mean, ow. &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2010/12/20/cnn-poll-three-quarters-approve-of-new-tax-cut-law/&#x22;&#x3E;CNN&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

Yeah, who would do that. We&#x27;d rather complain about it..&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;307-310 million citizens.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;What if $2 was donated twice a year, voluntarily, to the pay the U.S. debt by every American? Or more than a few dollars?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Voted? Good. Call Voters!</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/11/2/916160/-Voted-Good-Call-Voters</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;We&#x27;re down to the last few hours -- a few hours that could make or break the progressive agenda over the next two years.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Please take some time, after you&#x27;ve voted yourself, to get on the phones. You can visit Organizing for America&#x27;s &#x3C;a href=&#x22;https://call.barackobama.com/campaigns/&#x22;&#x3E;2010 Phonebanking Campaign&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and begin calling registered Democrats now. These are usually friendly calls -- just ask if they&#x27;ve voted yet; remind them to if they haven&#x27;t -- you can even help them out by providing their polling location.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x27;s quick, painless, and it can help.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Why ENDA Matters</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/10/19/911686/-Why-ENDA-Matters</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There&#x27;s often been a lot of diaries and support for the repeal of DADT on dKos. And luckily, there&#x27;s been recent judicial movement towards progress in that arena. But ENDA has sat on the back-burner. While the election on &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/phonebankmap&#x22;&#x3E;November 2&#x3C;/a&#x3E; may decide the fate of many progressive reforms, it&#x27;s worth keeping our eye on the ball in the final stretch.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;We believe in a country that always strives toward more equality; we believe none of us are lesser in personhood. Then ENDA matters because legally, many have no repercussions for lost jobs, embarrassment, harassment. The majority of states &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://laborday.aflcio.org/issues/jobseconomy/workersrights/rightsatwork_e/disc_sexorient.cfm&#x22;&#x3E;have no ENDA-equivalent laws&#x3C;/a&#x3E;: there are workplace protection laws for sexual orientation in only 21 states.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;A particularly egregious case reminds us how petty and irrational people can be. A gay man was fired in Mississippi. The man was a corrections officer for a college-town police department. He was fired because he called the police one night: he called the police because he was the victim of assault. Read again, if needed. More below, if you can stomach it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Compassionate Conservativism in Mississippi</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/10/16/910913/-Compassionate-Conservativism-in-Mississippi</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I was embarrassed to read Bob Herbert&#x27;s new op-ed in &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nytimes.com/2010/10/16/opinion/16herbert.html?hp&#x22;&#x3E;the New York Times&#x3C;/a&#x3E; today. One of the men behind the machinery of the current GOP is Haley Barbour, governor of Mississippi. His term ends in 2012. Herbert&#x27;s column concerns the Scott Sisters of Mississippi, two (black) women arrested in 1993 for robbery. They were sentenced to two consecutive life terms. Read more &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.huffingtonpost.com/anthony-papa/the-scott-sisters-two-lif_b_169468.html&#x22;&#x3E;here&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. Herbert contrasts other pardons Barbour has made against this one he refuses to consider.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It&#x27;s worth mentioning the Scott Sisters didn&#x27;t hurt anyone -- and stole a grand total of $11. From people they knew.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;More below...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Remember the Mosque Debate?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/9/28/906080/-Remember-the-Mosque-Debate</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;No? I wish I didn&#x27;t either. So enter the fray, more to discuss: a new mosque built in the deep south. Southern Mississippi, heart of former and lingering intolerances, where progress goes to slow.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.hattiesburgamerican.com/article/20100926/OPINION/9260303/Islamic-Center-of-Hattiesburg-offers-much-to-city-&#x22;&#x3E;Hattiesburg American&#x3C;/a&#x3E; -- CHRIST JESUS said: &#x22;Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.&#x22; This is the first and greatest commandment.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And the second is like it: &#x27;Love your neighbor as yourself.&#x27;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Did this commandment say: Only love your Christian neighbor? No, it didn&#x27;t. In this global society, your neighbor is not just the family living next door to you. Your neighbor could be someone in the next county, state, region, or even in another country.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;One appropriate definition of &#x22;love&#x22; is &#x22;affectionate concern for the well-being of others.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;One new neighbor in Hattiesburg is the Islamic Center of Hattiesburg located at 211 N. 25th Ave., across from the University of Southern Mississippi.

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Okay, I usually dislike these diaries that pretend to have the magic bullet on messaging. But how about this?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;There are no tax cuts for the wealthy. There is only the &#x3C;del&#x3E;millionaires&#x3C;/del&#x3E; billionaires bail-out that George W. Bush implemented. Like some of the other infamous bail-outs, it is not necessary, we can&#x27;t afford it, and they don&#x27;t deserve it.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Lobbyists Bet on the GOP (Again)</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/9/9/900511/-Lobbyists-Bet-on-the-GOP-Again</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Yep, surprise, surprise -- big business lobbyists are buying up Republican &#x22;consultants&#x22; in the belief that the GOP will hold a majority in some branch next year.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/10/business/10lobby.html?_r=1&#x26;amp;hp&#x22;&#x3E;WASHINGTON&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x26;#8212; With Democrats in danger of losing control of Congress, some prominent lobbying shops, trade groups and contractors are already moving to bring more Republicans on board to bolster their political fortunes.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Lobbyists, political consultants and headhunters all say that the going rate for Republicans &#x26;#8212; particularly current and former House staff members &#x26;#8212; has risen significantly in just the last few weeks, with salaries beginning at $300,000 and rising to as high as $1 million for private-sector positions.

<title>Haley Barbour Hoards Stimulus Money</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/9/7/899983/-Haley-Barbour-Hoards-Stimulus-Money</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;After saying he wouldn&#x27;t accept stimulus money in 2009 (&#x22;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.mpbonline.org/content/governor-barbour-say-no-50-million-stimulus-funds&#x22;&#x3E;We need a stimulus bill, just not this one. It&#x26;#8217;s too big, it&#x26;#8217;s too expensive&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x22;), the Governor of Mississippi ended up &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20100820/NEWS/8200340/Barbour-Will-apply-for-stimulus&#x22;&#x3E;applying&#x3C;/a&#x3E; for the federal dollars. While the stimulus was &#x3C;em&#x3E;just too big&#x3C;/em&#x3E; for Barbour, he&#x27;s now stashing away $97 million dollars from this year&#x27;s budget -- even during the rashest of cuts to healthcare, education, mental health, and the like.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Now, if the stimulus was too big, you&#x27;d think a state could&#x27;ve spent it all in the past year and half. But Barbour is refusing to help schools and universities as they wrestle with &#x3C;strong&#x3E;current&#x3C;/strong&#x3E; crises:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>No More Lapdances: RNC Goes Broke</title>

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0810/41324.html&#x22;&#x3E;The troubled Republican National Committee&#x3C;/a&#x3E; has just over $5 million in the bank for the final stretch of the 2010 mid-term election campaign, according to an unannounced filing with the FEC disclosed Friday night.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The report also indicates that the national party headed by embattled chairman Michael Steele is carrying just over $2 million in debt.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;There was no press release from the RNC attempting to put a positive spin on the grim numbers.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Instead, the article says, Republicans are outsourcing fundraising -- via American Crossroads and Karl Rove. In a separate &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0810/41327.html&#x22;&#x3E;article&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, American Crossroads reports taking in $2 million in July from various billionaires.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>A History of Marijuana</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/8/3/890036/-A-History-of-Marijuana</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I was enjoying the funny, intelligent and highly-aware comments in HuffingtonPost&#x27;s front-page article &#x22;&#x27;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/03/just-say-now-left-right-c_n_669043.html#postComment&#x22;&#x3E;Just Say Now&#x27;: Left-Right Coalition Launches Campaign to Legalize Pot&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x22; The page has exploded with comments, many seemingly from new HuffPo users. Which leads me to believe there is a real from-the-roots interest in legalizing pot. Many other commenters -- supportive -- were known Republicans, libertarians, or tea partiers. With this kind of strange coalition, who knows what we could do?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;So, I began posting snippets on HP from a paper I had written on the history of marijuana. Got some nice responses and decided to bring it to you guys!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Humans have had a very long engagement with the plant. Those theories that keep popping up against legalization -- addiction, crime, even blatant racism -- are nothing new. Follow me below for the paper in full, as well as sourcing. History has a lesson for us.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Let&#x27;s go back.</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/7/19/885535/-Let-s-go-back</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here&#x27;s the scene: 2005. Bush just won re-election and plans to privatize social security. Congress passes his energy bill, written by lobbyists to subsidize the oil industry. Democrats just barely manage to salvage the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Regulations have been stunted, and regulators are having &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2008/sep/11/usa.oil&#x22;&#x3E;sex and coke parties&#x3C;/a&#x3E; with industry. Hurricane Katrina smashes the Gulf Coast. Thousands homeless as Bush congratulates FEMA Director: &#x22;Heckuva job, Brownie.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Why not go back? &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://voices.washingtonpost.com/plum-line/&#x22;&#x3E;The Washington Post&#x3C;/a&#x3E; notes that Rep. Pete Session (R-TX), in a discussion about Republicans under Bush on &#x3C;em&#x3E;Meet the Press&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, suggested just this. &#x22;We need to go back to the exact same agenda that is empowering the free enterprise system rather than diminish it.&#x22; Sessions&#x27; strange wording is incidental to what he&#x27;s saying. How to best articulate the odd notion that Bush knew what was better for our economy?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>BP Evasion: Cuts Claims Payments, Won&#x27;t Reveal Info</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/7/11/883454/-BP-Evasion-Cuts-Claims-Payments-Won-t-Reveal-Info</link>
<description>&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.miamiherald.com/2010/07/10/1724825/la-bp-may-cut-payments-to-40000.html&#x22;&#x3E;NEW ORLEANS&#x3C;/a&#x3E; -- BP has decided to reduce payments to tens of thousands of people whose claim files are incomplete, the secretary of Louisiana&#x27;s Department of Children and Family Services said.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;This action is irresponsible and in complete contrast to BP&#x27;s repeated promise that they will &#x27;make things right,&#x27;&#x22; she wrote in a letter sent Friday to federal oil spill claims administrator Kenneth Feinberg.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;BP estimates nearly half of the 90,000 claims filed will receive lower payments. BP claims the people don&#x27;t have good enough records. Unbelievable -- people suffer at this company&#x27;s incompetency for months and months, and BP complains about records? How about that safety record, BP?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And speaking of records, BP refuses to release any information on claims-filed, claims-completed, and how &#x3C;del&#x3E;much&#x3C;/del&#x3E; little money has been issued.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Analogy for Disaster</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/6/13/875608/-Analogy-for-Disaster</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;A lot of air and countless pixels have been spent on finding the appropriate historical analogy for the BP Gulf disaster. This has resulted in unfortunate comparisons as we attempt to comb history for answers. Many on the right (and some on the left) have seen Hurricane Katrina and the Gulf disaster as somehow symmetrical. On the left, Valdez or Chernobyl have been referenced.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Another historical comparison was re-polished and published yesterday. In Biloxi&#x27;s &#x3C;em&#x3E;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.sunherald.com/2010/06/12/2254661/1979-ixtoc-disaster-gulfs-other.html&#x22;&#x3E;Sun-Herald&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/em&#x3E;, Glenn Garvin compares a recent major oil spill in the Gulf (1979&#x27;s Ixtoc I spill) to BP&#x27;s oil disaster.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;MALAQUITE BEACH, Texas &#x26;#8212; The oil was everywhere, long black sheets of it, 15 inches thick in some places. Even if you stepped in what looked like a clean patch of sand, it quickly and gooily puddled around your feet. And Wes Tunnell, as he surveyed the mess, had only one bleak thought: &#x26;#8220;Oh, my God, this is horrible! It&#x26;#8217;s all gonna die!&#x26;#8221;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But it didn&#x26;#8217;t. Thirty-one years after the worst oil spill in North American history blanketed 150 miles of Texas beach, tourists noisily splash in the surf and turtles drag themselves into the dunes to lay eggs.

<title>Do bad people exist?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/16/866997/-Do-bad-people-exist</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Or just bad actions?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;My mother went to visit my aunt a few weeks ago. My aunt has mental issues, possible brain damage, and often has seizures. She had just been moved from one assisted living home to another. At the first home, for mentally-ill patients, they caught her smoking cigarettes in her closet. As punishment (I suppose), they moved her to this new &#x22;assisted living home,&#x22; without notifying immediate family.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;When my mother saw her at the new home, she became understandably distressed. She got my aunt out of there immediately. We went back together later to pick up my aunt&#x27;s things. It was a horrible place. I took photos while I was there.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>It&#x27;s not as bad as I thought.</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/5/3/863070/-It-s-not-as-bad-as-I-thought</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;200,000 gallons of oil spewing out, per day, conservatively.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;It&#x27;s not as bad as I thought,&#x22; said Rep. Gene Taylor (D-MS) on Saturday: that people shouldn&#x27;t worry about the oil spill in the Gulf.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Taylor can see the future as well. He claims the spill will clean itself up &#x22;naturally&#x22; within &#x22;the next week.&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;How does Taylor know this? Because &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d109:HR04761:@@@R&#x22;&#x3E;in 2006&#x3C;/a&#x3E;, Taylor voted to end the moratorium on offshore drilling. The bill was sponsored by - gasp! - Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. It&#x27;s in his interests for this to end quietly.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Action: Call Republican Districts</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/3/16/846840/-Action-Call-Republican-Districts</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;If you&#x27;re calling Congress, don&#x27;t stop. If you can sneak in a few extra phone calls, OFA is urging members to contact neighbors and friends in Republican districts and turn the tide for healthcare reform.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Please visit &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://my.barackobama.com/page/votercontact/login?requested=/page/votercontact/make_calls%3Fcampaign_id%3DfnVD&#x22;&#x3E;Organizing for America&#x3C;/a&#x3E; to get started. Obama called on Congress to have courage. And we&#x27;ve called on them to stick to Democratic principles that have been proposed and ignored for 100 years. We&#x27;re closer than we&#x27;ve ever been.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;But there aren&#x27;t enough of us.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>A New Kos Weekly: Kos Poet Fridays</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/3/10/844964/-A-New-Kos-Weekly-Kos-Poet-Fridays</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Hello all. As a poetry-tourist and an amateur writer, I would like to begin a new weekly offering on Kos. Every Friday, around 8PM (EST), a diary will be posted exclusively about and for poetry.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;First, a quick shout out to &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2010/3/9/22339/13514/72#c72&#x22;&#x3E;cfk&#x3C;/a&#x3E; for suggesting I fill the missing poetry diaries. I understand there were some others who did a similar project, but they have fallen off lately.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Want to read and write poetry weekly? Follow me below for details and how to help.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Three Blind Mice - Of Weather &#x26; Healthcare</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/3/9/844490/-Three-Blind-Mice-Of-Weather-Healthcare</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The National Flood Insurance Program of 1968 enacted protections for homes prone to flooding. When private insurers wouldn&#x27;t provide coverage, the government offered insurance. This insurance is meant to be self-supporting.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Interestingly, among the rabble-rousing of the healthcare debate, a small bill was forwarded to expand the NFIP to cover hurricane-prone areas, after Katrina left many with &#x22;wind&#x22; denials. Perhaps this legislation is helpful. (Though some have criticized the NFIP for inducing a sense of invincibility in environmentally-hazardous areas.)&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;What does it have to do with healthcare? The bill (&#x22;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.taylor.house.gov/index.php?option=com_content&#x26;amp;task=view&#x26;amp;id=404&#x26;amp;Itemid=36&#x22;&#x3E;Multiple Peril Insurance Act of 2009&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x22;) was sponsored by Gene Taylor (D-MS) and includes 21 co-sponsors, mostly Democrats, mostly supporting of HCR passage. But there are a few, including the sponsor himself, who oppose &#x22;government intervention&#x22; in healthcare. Why for? Let&#x27;s meet them!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Google / Privacy Backlash</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/2/13/836702/-Google-Privacy-Backlash</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Internet users try to maintain a veneer of anonymity for all sorts of reasons. We are never truly anonymous, of course, but taking steps to secure your privacy online is often integral in a political context.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;em&#x3E;A dumb move&#x3C;/em&#x3E;. If you currently have a GMAIL account, you are currently - by default - set up with a &#x22;Google Buzz&#x22; account, a social networking site. You may have &#x22;followers&#x22; or automatically be &#x22;following&#x22; people based on your e-mail history. This catastrophic gaffe just became apparent to me. Somewhat educated, and familiar with technology - it just took me a good five minutes to figure out how to get out of this crap.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Instructions and more below.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/6/801583/-Man-Sentenced-to-3-Years-for-Threat-Against-Obama</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Welcome to the internet. I am not anonymous. Neither are you.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;All those crazies you see lurking on the comment boards of newspapers and sites might be, well, actually ill.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;A Wisconsin man was sentenced late today in federal court in Jackson [Mississippi] to three years in prison for making a threat on the Internet to assassinate then-President-elect Barack Obama.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Steven Joseph Christopher, 42, faced a maximum five years in prison.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;[...]&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Christopher said he never intended to harm Obama. He said he made the threat to gain attention for his cause that he is the second coming of Christ and the apocalypse is coming in 2012 and much of the world will be destroyed. - &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.clarionledger.com/article/20091106/NEWS/91106033/Man+who+threatened+Obama+sentenced&#x22;&#x3E;Clarion Ledger&#x3C;/a&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Alleged suspect is Major Nidal Hassan, M.D., supposedly a military psychiatrist.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;This will be a short diary&#x22; about how sad Halloween is.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Horribley it began with the a Christian annex of a pagan, Druid holiday. Can you believe this? Me neither. We thought Harry Potter was bad. ...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Apparently people dressed as spirits to avoid the very reel spirits from taking them. We still do this part in a way!!@&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Now comes the socialism part...&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Opt-Out &#x26; Go Blue</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/26/797241/-Opt-Out-Go-Blue</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There&#x27;s this argument bubbling up time and again that the opt-out is actually good politically. Never mind policy implications; we think, any state that opts out will immediately see a political leadership reversal. The end of the red states. No one in their right mind would opt-out! List of Republican-led states:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;ALABAMA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;ALASKA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;ARIZONA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;CALIFORNIA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;CONNECTICUT
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;FLORIDA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;HAWAII
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;IDAHO
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;INDIANA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;LOUISIANA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;MINNESOTA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;MISSISSIPPI
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;NEBRASKA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;NEVADA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;NORTH DAKOTA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;RHODE ISLAND
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;SOUTH CAROLINA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;SOUTH DAKOTA
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;TEXAS
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;UTAH
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;VERMONT
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;There is also confusion about who decides the opt-out -- governors, state houses, a public vote? The point is that many states are vulnerable to opting out. Why? Ideology, for one. Another is budget concerns. Nevermind that most states are already broke.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Democrats are &#x22;Optimistic&#x22;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/25/797062/-Democrats-are-Optimistic</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Time to put your head in the microwave.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Welcome to day 45 of What The Fuck Is Going On.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Today, &#x22;Meteor Blades&#x22; pulverized the rec list. How dare he! People are upset about some kind of ambiguous action Obama &#x3C;em&#x3E;isn&#x27;t&#x3C;/em&#x3E; doing. Late breaking news of a girl in an attic, thinking she is in a balloon. Earlier this week over 300,000 calls went out from Obama for America alone pushing healthcare reform. Obviously Obama wants to kill reform!&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And lo and behold, the senators are speaking:&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Several Democratic senators voiced optimism on Sunday that Congress would pass a health care bill containing at least the germ of a government-run insurance program. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/26/health/policy/26talkshows.html?_r=1&#x26;amp;hp&#x22;&#x3E;NYT&#x3C;/a&#x3E;

<title>Obama Pushes for Senior&#x27;s Economic Stimulus </title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/14/793402/-Obama-Pushes-for-Senior-s-Economic-Stimulus</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The Social Security Administration will announce that there will be no cost-of-living increase in 2010. This is because inflation rates continue to be in the negative.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;However, because Fed inflation rates don&#x27;t count decreasing home values or food and energy and medicine prices, President Obama is asking Congress to approve one-time payments of $250 - about the standard COLA increase - to seniors, including Social Security and veteran&#x27;s benefits recipients, the disabled, railroad retirees and retired public employees who don&#x27;t receive SS.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;Even as we seek to bring about recovery, we must act on behalf of those hardest hit by this recession,&#x22; &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.huffingtonpost.com/wires/2009/10/14/obama-calls-for-250-payme_0_ws_321253.html?page=4&#x26;amp;show_comment_id=32816777#comment_32816777&#x22;&#x3E;Obama said&#x3C;/a&#x3E; in a statement. &#x22;This additional assistance will be especially important in the coming months, as countless seniors and others have seen their retirement accounts and home values decline as a result of this economic crisis.&#x22;

<title>Credit to Debt to Carefree</title>

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Sounds like a bad infomercial. Or sounds like an angry citizen who took direct action.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Apparently one woman owed around $6,000 to Bank of America, who had upped her rates and fees because of incomplete payments. Instead of working with the company, she posted a YouTube video calling for a &#x22;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/09/14/debtors-revolt-woman-refu_n_285394.html&#x22;&#x3E;debtor&#x27;s revolt&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x22; and has stopped payment on her credit card debt.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Dems will admonish Wilson in House</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/11/780555/-Dems-will-admonish-Wilson-in-House</link>
<description>&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;WASHINGTON &#x26;#8212; Democratic leaders are planning to vote early next week to admonish Republican Rep. Joe Wilson if he does not apologize on the House floor for yelling &#x22;You lie!&#x22; at President Barack Obama.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I expect he&#x27;ll apologize promptly on the floor. Unfortunately it looks we&#x27;re giving him more of a stage than he deserves.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Healthcare vs. Earmarks</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/10/779826/-Healthcare-vs-Earmarks</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Gene Taylor (D-MS) is a blue dog and a coward.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;Let&#x27;s clear the table of all those controversial issues and let&#x27;s just go back to things that make sense,&#x22; said &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.wdam.com/Global/story.asp?S=11035491&#x22;&#x3E;Taylor&#x3C;/a&#x3E; last Wednesday.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I am not sure what controversial issues he is talking about - criminializing pre-existing conditions, allowing more competition and choice, providing the insured with stability and security? Which is it, Representative?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x22;So what we need to do is just slow this down and take a look at the promises we&#x27;ve already made to our military retirees, to our senior citizens, to the less fortunate americans and get a grasp on how we are going to pay for those promises before we start making any new &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.wlbt.com/Global/story.asp?S=10840956&#x22;&#x3E;promises&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x22;
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;His biggest concern is &#x22;how to pay for it.&#x22; These questions never crossed his mind when voting for outrageous funding for two wars. In fact, I don&#x27;t think they crossed his mind when he was ranked 19th out of 435 House members - for supporting earmarks.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The site is divided into three sections: information is arranged for if you have health insurance, if you do not have any coverage, and information for all Americans.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Take Away Their Health Insurance</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/7/31/760263/-Take-Away-Their-Health-Insurance</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I hope progressive (and funny) Congress people like Representative Weiner can take the unveiling of Hypocrites a bit further.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Someone needs to introduce legislation to remove Congress&#x27; healthcare. I&#x27;d like to know which Republicans will vote to keep theirs while voting against the American people&#x27;s coverage.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Some Health Care Anecdotes</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/7/24/757531/-Some-Health-Care-Anecdotes</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;My mother broke her arm today; fell in the shower. She was at the hospital at 9AM. By 4PM still waiting for surgery. No, we&#x27;re not Canadian! &#x22;Greatest health care in the world&#x22; ... At least she&#x27;s covered, a little.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I am wondering why everyone thinks we&#x27;re destined for failure if it drags out? I understand that the forces that exist will try to mount opposition, but if you recall, the same was said of Obama&#x27;s inevitable demise in the temporally expansive primary season.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I cannot believe this Congress will return with no plan. If they do, we&#x27;ll have a colossal shit fest. I expect the opposite: I give more credit not only to some of our political leaders but also to the public. We&#x27;ve been primed for this to come for a while now. Those of us without health insurance don&#x27;t like waiting, but we&#x27;re used to it. I can wait another month if it means it actually goes through.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
