<title>A Price I&#x27;m Willing to Pay</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/4/14/966865/-A-Price-I-m-Willing-to-Pay</link>
<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr said, &#x22;Taxes are the price we pay for civilization.&#x22; &#x26;nbsp;I grew up one of four boys in a working poor family. &#x26;nbsp;When I was 13 my father died and the government, through Social Security Survivor Benefits, paid to make sure I had a safe place to live, food on the table, and a measure of stability and security. &#x26;nbsp;I went to a public university on Pell Grants and Academic Scholarships. &#x26;nbsp;Every year I filed my 1040 and got some money back, and I needed it. &#x26;nbsp;Not this year though.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Thankless Work</title>

<description>
&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve been away from the Kos for a little while and the last time I was here, still on the older version, there was the occasional diary about how people were fed up over DK4 and were going to TTFN or GBCW. As a professional web developer I&#x27;d like to share my opinion on the new site.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The Tragedy of &#x22;Me Too&#x22; Compassion</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/1/6/933827/-The-Tragedy-of-Me-Too-Compassion</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;A story has swept the nation by storm, that of Ted Williams. &#x26;nbsp;If you are out of the loop, here you go, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6kI_u3ho_c&#x22;&#x3E;YouTube Video that started it all.&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here&#x27;s the story in a nutshell. &#x26;nbsp;Man falls in love with broadcasting, works successfully for a while, drugs and alcohol destroy his life, ends up on the streets for 10 years, discovered by local newspaper, takes YouTube by storm, life turned around. &#x26;nbsp;Huzzah.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;There is a problem though in this story, not with Ted Williams but with America.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The most important lesson, it happened again</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2010/3/22/849074/-The-most-important-lesson-it-happened-again</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;This site, and I&#x27;m certain many other places will be awash today in congratulations, speculations, and ruminations about the Health Care Reform bill. &#x26;nbsp; Yesterday was a major victory, and I am quite groggy today having stayed up far too late to see the historic votes and watch President Obama speak and listen to the talking heads blather on. &#x26;nbsp;There is a lesson to take away, one that has happened again and again, one that needs to be learned before the next initiative starts.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>I hope NPR has a return policy</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/11/5/800829/-I-hope-NPR-has-a-return-policy</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I saw some diaries during pledge week that made me think twice about donating to NPR, the big one that hit the rec list was &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/10/23/85241/367&#x22;&#x3E;Why I am done contributing to NPR&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;I read the comments, and &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2009/10/23/85241/367/22#c22&#x22;&#x3E;this one&#x3C;/a&#x3E; stuck with me
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;NPR = Nice Polite Republicans&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;Behind the &#x22;balanced&#x22; quasi-liberalism is a beltway mindset, a framing that fundamentally supports the Republican / lobbyist influence over the beltway agenda. &#x26;nbsp;Thanks for this diary.&#x3C;br /&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;h/t Rethfernhim&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;So I contemplated not donating, but I make a nice living and I listen to NPR on my commute to and from work and find it informative enough and although not nearly progressive enough for my tastes, leaps and bounds better than any other talk radio, so I donated $150.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The Broken Mental Model of the Right</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/10/2/788859/-The-Broken-Mental-Model-of-the-Right</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Michael Moore&#x27;s new film &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.capitalismalovestory.com/&#x22;&#x3E;Capitalism: A Love Story&#x3C;/a&#x3E; premiered last night. &#x26;nbsp;I&#x27;m going to see it tonight, and in preparation, I am thinking about Capitalism. &#x26;nbsp;This led me to a bigger concept and something that I learned in college. &#x26;nbsp;I would like to examine the idea of a Mental Model and how it relates to the very real disconnect between progressives and conservatives.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Their opinions = fact, Our facts = opinion</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/15/782263/-Their-opinions-fact-Our-facts-opinion</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve been trying to formulate in my head what makes me so enraged at the mainstream media. &#x26;nbsp;I used to get annoyed when I heard the blatant falsehoods parroted as though they had some truth, some value. &#x26;nbsp;Now I can barely bring myself to watch, especially in the morning when there is literally no good option. &#x26;nbsp;Should I watch Joe Scarborough and his band of merry-yes-men, or the Sugar Coated Substance Free Robin Meade&#x27;s wardrobe hour, or Fox and Frie.... here comes the rage stroke.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I wanted to move past rage, for once, and try to figure out why these shows angered me so. &#x26;nbsp;Have I become the progressive version of a Fox Viewer, unable to cope with anything that doesn&#x27;t conform to my world-view. &#x26;nbsp;That thought shook me, could I have become everything I despise. &#x26;nbsp;I thought hard about that and thought about what perturbed me about the mainstream media and I realized what it is, follow below the fold for my revelation.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>[Breaking] I am a crazy person</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/3/776187/--Breaking-I-am-a-crazy-person</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I&#x27;ve come to a conclusion, its taken me a long time to admit, but I am a crazy person. &#x26;nbsp;I must be, that is the only explanation. &#x26;nbsp;What has led me to such self-discovery, it&#x27;s two-fold really. &#x26;nbsp;On the one hand, I&#x27;ve been watching the media and the only way I can square my world view with their&#x27;s is that I must have some sort of cognitive disorder. &#x26;nbsp;On the other, I&#x27;ve decided that me and a friend are going to host a Progressive Rally, the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://factsnotfear.blogspot.com/2009/08/central-ohio-facts-not-fear-rally.html&#x22;&#x3E;Facts not Fear Rally for Reform&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and also charter a bus to DC for the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://americansunitedhcr.wordpress.com/&#x22;&#x3E;September 13th Reform Rally&#x3C;/a&#x3E;.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/9/1/775500/-Pro-Reform-Rally-in-Ohio-was-AMAZING-Updated3x</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I just got back from the Organizing for America Columbus Ohio Rally, and it was Amazing.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Highlights:
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;ul&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;Sherrod Brown calling out the 10 deathers that were there&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;Deathers quitting 20 minutes into the rally because the hundreds of supporters completely shut them down&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;McNary&#x27;s amazing call to action&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;li&#x3E;The heartland overwhelmingly supporting the Public Option&#x3C;/li&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;/ul&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>OH NO, My dog is sick</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/28/773534/-OH-NO-My-dog-is-sick</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;The dog in this case is not a metaphor, he is my actual puppy, and he is not feeling very well. &#x26;nbsp;He is my adorable, loving, 4 month old westie/schnauzer mix&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Here is a picture of my little pup Harvey&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;a target=&#x22;_blank&#x22; href=&#x22;http://s440.photobucket.com/albums/qq123/mdnowack/?action=view&#x26;amp;current=1242040787994.jpg&#x22;&#x3E;&#x3C;img width=&#x22;400&#x22; alt=&#x22;Harvey&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq123/mdnowack/1242040787994.jpg&#x22; height=&#x22;300&#x22; border /&#x3E;&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;He&#x27;s on the mend but for a few days I was very worried about him, he also helped open my eyes to the real damning part of healthcare in this country.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>[ACTION DIARY]: Central Ohio Reform Rally</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/25/772222/--ACTION-DIARY-Central-Ohio-Reform-Rally</link>

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is a short sweet action diary for anyone in Central Ohio who wants to rally for reform. &#x26;nbsp;This rally is currently being pulled together by a small dedicated group of progressives, we are currently talking to Organizing For America, Workers United, and UHCAN to build a Progressive Coalition for this rally.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Who is John Galt?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/8/5/762104/-Who-is-John-Galt</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;You&#x27;ve seen the bumper stickers, you&#x27;ve heard the shrill tremulous voices on the right, and the question on everyone&#x27;s mind is &#x22;Who is John Galt?&#x22; &#x26;nbsp;Now for those of you who have read Ayn Rand&#x27;s Atlas Shrugged (I refuse to until the birthers take the white house and make it mandatory reading), you will be aware that throughout the book the question on the lips of the people is, &#x22;Who is John Galt?&#x22; According to &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Galt&#x22;&#x3E;wikipedia&#x3C;/a&#x3E; &#x22;Galt is acknowledged to be a creator and inventor who embodies the power of the individual capitalist.&#x22; Furthermore, &#x22;The phrase becomes an expression of helplessness and despair at the current state of the novel&#x27;s fictionalized world.&#x22; So the phrase may make sense to use as a rallying cry but let&#x27;s take a look at how this phrase reveals much more about the Republican party than they would probably like.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Krugman Editorial Comments: American Stupidity</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/7/31/760161/-Krugman-Editorial-Comments-American-Stupidity</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Paul Krugman has &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/31/opinion/31krugman.html&#x22;&#x3E;an editorial&#x3C;/a&#x3E; in the Abbreviated Pundit Roundup today, and as usual he delivers a clear, concise, and informative piece of writing. &#x26;nbsp;Mr. Krugman is a brilliant economist whose ability to explain complex situations in simple (but not over-simplified) terms is a true gift. &#x26;nbsp;His piece today says basically what we all know already&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;... the government is already deeply involved, even in private insurance.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;And that government involvement is the only reason our system works at all.
&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
&#x3C;/blockquote&#x3E;
&#x3C;p&#x3E;The comments that accompany Mr. Krugman&#x27;s article contain within some of the saddest fables of the right-wing, and some out and out zaniness. &#x26;nbsp;I wrote my own comment but fear that my passion might be moderated away, so I thought I would post here as well.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;You may not be aware but last fall the economy exploded. &#x26;nbsp;This recession has been one of the most difficult economic times since the Great Depression, and I really don&#x27;t need to give anyone on DKos a refresher on how bad it&#x27;s getting. &#x26;nbsp;I would like to bring attention to a &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://dealbook.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/10/aig-seeks-government-support-for-bonus-payouts/&#x22;&#x3E;new story&#x3C;/a&#x3E; emerging today that has AIG looking for a way to pay out more bonuses.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Rationing Activist Empathy</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/6/16/743083/-Rationing-Activist-Empathy</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There is a great healthcare debate on the horizon. &#x26;nbsp;The only thing that seems certain is that the system is broken, and the incentive for the Healthcare industry is to keep it that way. &#x26;nbsp;Health Insurance companies have had there profits skyrocket as affordability and care have plummeted for the consumer. &#x26;nbsp;The opponents of universal healthcare have come up with a scary buzzword to keep you from engaging the logic centers of your brain, &#x22;the R-word&#x22; or Rationing. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Progressive values shown effective again</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/5/21/733919/-Progressive-values-shown-effective-again</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;We have been told by the 24 hour news machine for the last 8 years that Americans are concerned with their tax cuts, keeping gays from getting married, and fighting terrorists no matter what the cost. &#x26;nbsp;This incessant meme has pervaded the discourse of politics in America, &#x22;We are a center-right Christian nation.&#x22; &#x26;nbsp;Every time Progressive values have been raised, they have been mocked as socialism or fascism or insert-scary-sounding-thing-ism. &#x26;nbsp;Progressive policies have been demonized time and again, with the same tired arguments, despite evidence again and again that they work at home and abroad.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Fox News &#x22;Journalism&#x22;</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/4/22/723188/-Fox-News-Journalism</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I recently had the joy of helping my fellow Kossacks by listening and transcribing an &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/4/22/722981/-Special-Forces-officer-schools-OReilly-on-torture&#x22;&#x3E;O&#x27;Reilly interview&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Doing so I took the utmost care in providing an accurate transcription, which can be found in the &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/comments/2009/4/22/01056/8976/176#c176&#x22;&#x3E;commment thread&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I wanted to use this dairy to take a look at the &#x22;journalism&#x22; that O&#x27;Reilly displays throughout this piece.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>The Trick of Rebranding</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/3/26/713219/-The-Trick-of-Rebranding</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There is a new craze sweeping the nation, and it goes by the unassuming moniker of rebranding. &#x26;nbsp;Company produce a product that killed thousands of people, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Altria_Group#Branding_as_Altria&#x22;&#x3E;rebrand&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;Want to sell out your values but not have people angry at you, &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.fdic.gov/llp/index.html&#x22;&#x3E;rebrand&#x3C;/a&#x3E;. &#x26;nbsp;An unassuming word to be sure, but I want to examine the insidiousness of this concept and the way that our brain has evolved to make us vulnerable to this trick.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>&#x27;We Surround Them&#x27; Principles?</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/3/13/708134/--We-Surround-Them-Principles</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Glenn Beck with the help of Chuck &#x22;Walker Texas Total Gym&#x22; Norris have declared today to be the &#x22;We Surround Them&#x22; day. &#x26;nbsp;A day that will surely go down in history as one of the most confusing days of dissent... baffling call to arms... wait, what the hell is this thing supposed to be?&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Well in any event they have posted 9 Principles (They lazily call it &#x22;The Nine Principles&#x22; I like the term, The 9 Pillars of Surroundedness and Round-house kicks)&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There is a definite crisis in America today. &#x26;nbsp;It is one that threatens to dismantle our way of life, and it is a deficit of wisdom. &#x26;nbsp;I came across a TED Talk the other day that is beautiful in its message, and finally puts into words in an eloquent and succinct way, the thoughts and feelings we know to be true.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Sane Bailout for Students</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2009/2/16/698232/-Sane-Bailout-for-Students</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;I recently read the very provocative diary by &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://slinkerwink.dailykos.com/&#x22;&#x3E;slinkerwink&#x3C;/a&#x3E; on the rec list entitled &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/2/16/12214/9992/517/698164&#x22;&#x3E;What&#x27;s The Argument Against Forgiving Student Loan Debt?&#x3C;/a&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;It is an interesting idea, but most of the comments have pointed out the downsides to such a plan, I would like to propose an alternative system, and some counter arguments to the most frequent counter-arguments in the comments.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Liberals, and I count myself among those ranks, subscribe to a philosophy that is currently causing our internal struggle between &#x22;Rah rah, follow Obama&#x22; and &#x22;Don&#x27;t be sheeple!&#x22; &#x26;nbsp;I think that as each side argues about which one is right we would be remiss if we don&#x27;t examine the aspect of our nature that inevitably causes this trouble.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;In the trials and tribulations of the Auto Industry Bailout hearings a lot is being said about how the Big 3 deserve to fail. &#x26;nbsp;There are good points to be made on both sides of the argument. &#x26;nbsp;The one argument I can&#x27;t accept is that the UAW is the cause of this failure and their continued existence makes any kind of bailout untenable.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/11/5/654244/-Yes-We-Will</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;For the last 2 years we have been chanting to others and to ourselves that after 8 years of being treated like children and being told that the corruption was too deep, the system too big, the lobbyists too powerful, that change was possible, &#x22;Yes We Can!&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;Now that we have been vindicated we need to turn this spirit of knowing what we can do into a resolve to make good on that promise of change and hope, &#x22;Yes We Will!&#x22;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;This is going to be a difficult road, America is at the brink, and I&#x27;d like to take a look at some of the potential pitfalls and the reasons to be hopeful.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>John Glenn helping to turn Ohio Blue</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/23/639845/-John-Glenn-helping-to-turn-Ohio-Blue</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;As a native Ohioan and a new Columbusonian (I don&#x27;t know what the correct word is for people living in Columbus) I have the distinct privilege of living near one of the greatest institutions in the nation, The Ohio State University. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;The Ohio State University (just to dispel any implications I&#x27;m not an alum, GO BGSU FALCONS!) has an amazing institute called the John Glenn School of Public Affairs. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;On November 4th, John Glenn, a personal hero of mine, distinguished and honorable Senator, and first American to orbit the Earth, will be at the School that bears his name to watch the election results with a bunch of Ohio Democrats.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Barack Obama, an end to terrorism</title>

<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;There have been a rash of stories that many of us have surely found deeply disturbing.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

<title>Electoral Vote Map</title>
<link>https://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/10/16/632532/-Electoral-Vote-Map</link>
<description>&#x3C;p&#x3E;Having data and understanding data are two different things. &#x26;nbsp;It&#x27;s very easy to go over to &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://pollster.com&#x22;&#x3E;Pollster&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and see a giant swath of red and think that a huge number of people are voting Republican. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;I wish to dispel this myth with the magic of an Electoral Vote proportioned map. In this map the states are sized by their number of electoral votes and colored according to Pollster data. &#x26;nbsp;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;img alt=&#x22; title=&#x22; src=&#x22;http://i440.photobucket.com/albums/qq123/mdnowack/newpollster20081016.png&#x22; /&#x3E;&#x3C;/p&#x3E;

&#x3C;p&#x3E;&#x3C;strong&#x3E;Update [2008-10-16 13:4:15 by ihumanable]:&#x3C;/strong&#x3E;
&#x3C;br /&#x3E;As some of you have correctly noted this is based off of the very cool app hosted by &#x3C;a href=&#x22;http://mydd.com&#x22;&#x3E;My Direct Democracy&#x3C;/a&#x3E; and I should have given credit where credit is due. &#x26;nbsp;I did make this map by hand to include leaning and toss-ups to better represent the data model.&#x3C;/p&#x3E;
