An open, heartfelt thank you to my Kos "quilt backers"

I received my healing quilt from Rain in Portland OR, today and I've been searching vainly for a way to contact each and every Kossack whose name is contained within the quilt, to send a personal note of thanks.

But I cannot find a way to do that within Daily Kos, so I offer this up to each of you. I am so incredibly grateful for your tangible outpouring of support.

And below the fold, I list the names that I have found on my lovely quilt. I plan to read your words over and over again in the coming months as it seems I will have some time to do so while I go through treatment for my lung cancer.

Group Health works as long as you don't have a serious disease

Let me introduce myself. I blog here and on the internet as moe99. I am a government attorney living in Washington state for the past 28 years.

I have been a member of Group Health Cooperative, one of two medical cooperatives in the nation, since 1983. My three children were born at Group Health, and they were treated there throughout their childhood for inoculations, colds, even whooping cough once, and various broken bones. My needs were met there as well, for the most part.

But two weeks ago, I was diagnosed with lung cancer, and the delays that are part of the normal Group Health experience make no sense at all in the present context and may operate to diminish my chances of full recovery. Let me explain below.

CNN language and bias

Earlier this morning, I read a headline on the front page of CNN that stated: "Obama could steal Virginia from GOP." Hmm, I thought. That implies a criminal act, does it not? That perhaps Senator Obama is taking something that does not rightfully belong to him. I wonder why CNN is doing that? Is it because they think McCain is entitled to the votes of Virginians?

Here it is:

http://www.cnn.com/...

Rolling Stone gives us the Straight Talk about McCain

On Sunday, I went over to a neighbors' house to write postcards for the Obama campaign. These were handwritten notes to undecided voters explaining why I was voting for Obama. It took 2 hours to write just 15 but all of us there were exhilirated and it felt like we had done some small thing for the campaign.

While I was writing the notes, my neighbor told me about an experience her mother had with John McCain. Her mother had worked as a discharge nurse at a hospital, and was on the floor the day McCain came to pick up Cindy after she had delivered. She told her daughter that it was one of the worst experiences she had gone through as a discharge nurse--McCain was in a hurry and extremely rude to the staff. He did not want to sit through and listen to the discharge instructions, and he was loud and abrasive about it.

Although this is a small story, it seems that, as Jung was wont to say that small stories illustrate larger issues and in this case it is a significant personality problem that Sen. McCain seems to suffer from. We are fortunate in that the Rolling Stone has just given us an in depth look into McCain's grandiosity with the publication of The Make Believe Maverick.

Is Bill Clinton the Iago of the Democratic party?

My question was sparked by comments that Matthew Yglesias posted on his website:

Thought of the Day

It sure was nice of Bill Clinton to put important national concerns
above petty partisanship by agreeing to host a John McCain campaign
speech and help the GOP nominee burnish his bipartisan credentials.
You might think a former President would be so committed to an axe-
grinding agenda that he couldn't see the big picture. But not Bill —
he puts country first, not some personal agenda. Oh what's that you
say? His wife ran for the Democratic nomination and lost? Think that
might be relevant?

http://yglesias.thinkprogress.org/...

Then here is a bit from Letterman two days ago, where Clinton was on
and Chris Rock followed him:

http://www.youtube.com/...

It would seem to me, that if you are a judge, particularly one appointed in 1985 by President Ronald Reagan, and that you are presiding over a notorious obscenity case, that you might want to keep your own house clean.

Well, Alex Kozinski, Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals musta thought the rules didn't apply to him.

The long term problem with Blackwater

I think Talking points memo tied some threads together quite neatly today when they noted that Blackwater has been operating above and outside the law in Iraq since the inception of the hostilities.

Spencer Ackerman noted that the State Department has given that mercenary comapany a green light to do whatever it wanted. And that the State Dept. Inspector General has actively blocked outised investigations of their conduct. Read his post in full. It is most troubling:
http://www.tpmmuckraker.com/...

What worries me beyond current concerns is below the fold.

US Representative from Ohio's 5th District doesn't even live there!

I'm a former resident of NW Ohio, many years ago. It's a rock ribbed Republican district for the most part. But they should not be letting their US representative, Paul Gillmor. live near Columbus, way the heck out of their distrct.

I learned this from the Defiance Crescent News online. Part of the article is posted below. But the conclusion should be clear--hijinks like this should not be tolerated and if this Gillmor refuses to live in the district he is elected from, he should be unceremoniously tossed out on his can. I hope someone in NW Ohio steps forward to do the job.

In Seattle, the residents have been used as a political ping pong ball in the wars between Gov. Gregoire and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels over whether to rebuild the noisy, nasty viaduct that runs along the waterfront, or pony up big bucks for a tunnel in fill dirt, or to tear it down and create a surface option. Follow me below and I will give you the skinny on the kerfuffle.

Looking for a gung ho inventor

As many of you have read, Seattle and its environs continue to suffer the after effects of one of the worst storms on record. Many homes remain without power, and residents who use gasoline powered generators or charcoal fired grills indoors are being hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning.

I went to Eddie Bauer today and ordered a radio that is powered by cranking it. Seattle has sold out, but there a few still on the shelves in one of their stores in MN. While doing so, it occurred to me, that someone could build a generator that is powered by bicycling indoors which would have the benefit of 0 production of carbon monoxide, while adding the benefit of increasing one's stamina and overall health as a result. I mentioned it on a diary talking about the Seattle storm, but think it is important enough to raise on its own.

More below the fold.

An Open Letter to Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi

These days Washington, D.C. seems like a sordid three-ring circus. There's so much sleaze and corruption oozing from the halls of power, it's hard to stay focused. We're all rubbernecking on the freeway as we drive past disaster after disaster.

Yet there are two issues that I think we need to stay focused on with laser like precision:

1) ending even the mere possibility that nuclear weapons could be used by this administration against Iran; and

2) doing everything in our power to see that Congress reasserts its power under the Constitution as a coequal partner and once again becomes a check on the current imperial presidency. The only way we can do this is for Democrats to take back Congress in 2006.

To that end, I am sending the following letter to Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi. Please join me in this effort on the flip side.

Shaking the fundies world the week before Easter

We are headed into Easter week, arguably the holiest week in the Christian calendar. The time where Jesus was betrayed by Judas, given up to the Pharisees who convicted him and turned him over to the Romans to be crucified, and yet miraculously came back to life, resurrected from the cross.

This forms the basis for the Christian religion. And a key part of this basis is Jesus' betrayal at the hands of Judas, who has been forever scorned as a result.

But the National Geographic announced today the translation of a Gnostic text from 300 AD that completely turns this belief on its head. And I want to see the reaction!

Daily Kos makes it onto the Bush enemies list

Although it should be no surprise. What is surprising is the size of the list--more than 10,000 enemies. This comes to us via Capitol Hill Blue.

From Capitol Hill Blue:

Bush Leagues
White House keeps dossiers on more than 10,000 'political enemies'
By DOUG THOMPSON

Spurred by paranoia and aided by the USA Patriot Act, the Bush Administration has compiled dossiers on more than 10,000 Americans it considers political enemies and uses those files to wage war on those who disagree with its policies.

The "enemies list" dates back to Bush's days as governor of Texas and can be accessed by senior administration officials in an instant for use in campaigns to discredit those who speak out against administration policies or acts of the President.

The computerized files include intimate personal details on members of Congress; high-ranking local, state and federal officials; prominent media figures and ordinary citizens who may, at one time or another, have spoken out against the President or Administration...

Michelle Malkin has a new book out. Titled Unhinged: Exposing Liberals Gone Wild, it is a typical Malkin oeuvre--poorly written, false facts, lots of drivel about liberals.

However, what is interesting to me is there appears to be a concerted effort by the right to suppress reviews critical of her book. They have learned that if you get 7 or more people to click on the inappropriate button, >poof< the review goes away. I would like to propose that we organize a counter guerrilla movement and do the same in reverse. More below

The website set up by Patrick Fitzgerald is a great idea. It allows those of us on the outside, access to key documents that define the investigation thus far and hopefully the indictments in the future. However, there is one major error on the site, that I hope an alert DOJ employee working for Fitzgerald will correct, if someone can get this information to them

We have been busy putting together the timeline of Katrina. This is an important step in determining responsibility and accountability. But another component that cannot be overlooked or underestimated is a solid determination of exactly what resources were available to the local and state authorities at the time.

You can issue all the emergency proclamations you want, but if you don't have the logistics in place, your words will be hollow and people will die. As we well know now.

Why are the Democrats masochists?

I've also posted this on my blog site, but I think it worth a wider look, so I am offering it here:

Are we masochists?
I've done a fair amount of soul searching in the past 8 days as well as read post mortems on the internet and discussed the results w/ friends and acquaintances. What has become clear to me is that I am not interested in blaming John Kerry or John Edwards for anything. I think that the voting irregularities in FL and OH are sufficient to cause most considerate folks to start to demand recounts and verification of the votes. But that is grist for another mill, another time.
Light one candle for hope, part 2

A couple of days ago I posted a note from Lisa in NYC who suggested that we each light a candle tonight. It disappeared in the pre election flurry of posts, but I think the suggestion was so worthwhile, that I am going to mention it again. Many of us have children or other demands that make it impossible to participate with all the brave Kossacks who are working their tails off with GOTV across the country. I offer this as a humble thank you to them, and as a positive sign to our neigbors and to the world that we WILL overcome the darkness.

I hope you join me in lighting a candle tonight and placing it in a window for all to see.

I'm on an international political chat group that spun off of a literary discussion group. Today an Australian member wrote in to ask:

" What evidence do we have that the Democrats would really be any better than
the Republicans? Some of the posts (about actions by the CIA etc) seem to
imply that this is all far, far worse under the Republicans. But is it, really?"

Crawford paper losing its life b/c of Kerry endorsement?

Found this from an Orcinus reader and thought I should bring it to the attention of the 101st Keyboarding brigade a/k/a Kossacks:

Remember when Bush's home town newspaper endorsed Kerry? Given today's political climate, what sort of reaction might they have expected?

http://www.iconoclast-texas.com/Columns/Editorial/editorial40.htm

"We have been told by several avid Bush supporters that the days when newspapers publish editorials without personal repercussions are over. As publishers, we have printed editorials for decades, and have endorsed candidates, both Republican and Democrat. When Bush was endorsed four years ago, the Gore supporters did not respond with threats, nor did Democrats when we endorsed Reagan twice. Republicans did not threaten us personally or our business when we endorsed Carter and Clinton for their first terms.

"In the past, when individuals disagreed with an editorial, they would write a letter to the editor politely expressing a different point of view in contrast to the views of the publishers, which we have usually published. Occasionally someone would cancel a subscription or an ad, but this was rare." ...

"The new mode of operation, I am told, is that when a newspaper prints an editorial of which some sectors might disagree, the focus is now upon how to run the newspaper out of business. Out the window are the contributions the newspaper has made to the community in the past and the newspaper's extensive investment in the community."

...

"Unfortunately, for the Iconoclast and its publishers there have been threats -- big ones including physical harm.

"Too, some individuals are threatening innocent commercial concerns, claiming that if they advertise in The Iconoclast, they will be run out of business. We consider this improper in a democracy.

"Several young members of our staff covering Tonkawa Traditions this past weekend were angrily harassed and threatened that they must leave, which cut short their ability to fully do their jobs and instilled in them considerable fear for their safety. These reporters had nothing to do with that editorial. They were part-time college students working to pay their way through school and better themselves."

Also check out the letters they got, if you have the stomach for it.

http://www.iconoclast-texas.com/Columns/Letters/email1.htm

Update: Jesus' General (from whom I shamelessly stole the term 101st Keyboarding brigade, not knowing its freeper origins) notes that 'd', the Orcinus commenter also posted these remarks on atrios. Whoever 'd' is, thanks for alerting us.

Many folks have commented on how Shrub swaggers when he walks. And just how irritating it is.

Yet another example of how this administration is trying to do everything quick and dirty.

http://tinyurl.com/3ls26

"Major screw-up": Boot-camp virus runs rampant

Seattle Times Special Report

By Michael J. Berens
Seattle Times staff reporter

More than three decades ago, the Pentagon created two pills to ward off a lethal virus infecting boot-camp recruits. But defense officials abandoned the program in 1996 as too expensive. Now recruits are dying, thousands are falling ill, and the military is desperately racing to bring back a vaccine it once owned.
A top Pentagon official called it "a major screw-up," hobbling U.S. efforts to rapidly deploy troops abroad.

The respiratory virus now infects up to 2,500 service members monthly -- a staggering 1 in 10 recruits -- in the nation's eight basic-training centers, an analysis of military health-care records shows.
Face it, the Dems need someone who can take the hardline on this Administration, who can force discipline in the ranks (bet US Senators like to be referred to as ranks, eh?), who can be out there campaigning in the presidential election.

Daschle cannot do this. He is crippled by his heavily conservative state. He has to have at the back of his mind, the vision of Tom Foley, Speaker of the House, voted out by his E. Wa constituency in the early '90's. E. WA is a lot like S. Dakota in demographics.

Back during the election of 2000, slate ran a home video of a wedding reception from '92 featuring Shrub who looked as if he had a cocktail in hand and was slurring words and generally just looked wasted. This was 6 years after he supposedly went on the wagon, but at about the time he would have been snorting lines of coke at Camp David.

The former slate address no longer works, but I am wondering if anyone can pull it up and run it again.

I have the old address if that helps.
