Hundreds of people are gathered at Central Booking (100 Centre Street, Manhattan) cheering on detainees as they are slowly released from jail. They were coming out at a steady pace of about one per five minutes or so. (You do the math... I'm a lazy bitch.)

New York State law requires arrested folks (from jay walkers to serial killers) to be either charged or released within 24 hours. Greedy Bloomberg fucked up by biting off more then he could chew through the system, but is disregarding an order from NY state courts to let everyone go.

They're writing tickets and shoving people out the door as fast as they can, but now they have to check against rap sheets so that they don't actually let someone dangerous slip through the cracks.

At first we were lined up on the sidewalk directly across from Central Booking, but the cops eventually started pushing us into the park. People kept pushing back onto the walk (but not blocking it) in order to greet newly freed KIDS and guide them to medical attention in the park.

NYPD eventually brought out the barricades, but a group of singers linked arm in arm proudly waltzed around the barricade (and back) in an act of defiance.

Most of the cops were amused, but there were a few that didn't approve, including one who kept mocking the crowd (below.) Every time a kid ran across the street to freedom... hugging his or her parents and girlfriend, the crowd went nuts and the cops rolled their eyes. Most of the newly freed people were very shocked to see the screaming, clapping crowd.

What a great feeling for them.
