Germany: Merkel: close down Guantanamo Bay

According to German ZDF TV, the new German Chancellor, Ms Angela Merkel, does not sound as pro-Bush as Bush might have expected.

On the eve of her first official visit to the USA, Ms Merkel, a member of the conservative Christian Democrats, demanded, interviewed by Der Spiegel magazine, that the Bush administration close down Guantanamo Bay camp in Cuba.

She also demanded that German resident Kurnaz, detained by the US, and said to be tortured in Guantanamo Bay, should be freed.

Remember: Ms. Merkel is as Rightist and pro US government as German politicians come.
