When I started my political activism, in Virginia, we had a rule from the days of the Byrd machine: candidates in the Democratic primary had to commit to support the winner. No one could run in a Democratic primary, be rejected by the party's voters, and then take their independent candidacy to the voters in November.
It makes a lot of sense. Candidates who want to compete for the brand should commit to support the outcome. Otherwise, as John King asked Joe Lieberman this afternoon on CNN's Situation Room, "why have parties at all?"
Please join my open letter to Minority Leader Harry Reid on his "Give em Hell Harry" website. Leader Reid should commit to support the winner of the Connecticut primary. Otherwise, why have primaries at all?
Here's my letter to Senator Reid, please add your voice to it: http://www.giveemhellharry.com/...
