Update [2007-2-11 18:43:31 by Mike Stark]:
Want to address some of the cynicism I've seen in the early comments:
First: Which DraftGore site? There are four of them, at least. Why this one?
When I emailed one of the key supporters that was mentioned in the linked article, he pointed me to that site. His advisors are meeting and Gore hasn't told them to back off... that's at least a little bit tantalizing, especially since Gore told them to not bother in '04.
Second: I don't give money to non-candidates through Draft Websites.
For those concerned about not giving money, why don't you try to split the baby? Instead of giving $50, give $5.08 - that'll show support that they can count on later if he declares, but it won't sting your pocketbook.
2nd Update [2007-2-11 22:0:57 by Mike Stark]: Well, it's 10PM EST - this diary has been up about 3 1/2 hours. So far we're at about 1000 (or more) new sigs on the petition, I don't know how many donations and over 500 diary recs. I'm not sure what the current record is for Rec's, but I'm betting this one has set the record for a sleepy Sunday evening. It should be up most of the day tomorrow, when DKos gets the week's forst blast of heavy traffic, so I'm betting this will serve to raise some eyebrows in the political press.
Tomorrow, I'll try to get in touch with the DraftGore site and see how much activity they got from DKos. I'll update again then.
3rd Update [2007-2-12 16:45:26 by Mike Stark]: We're so close to breaking the record for most recommended DailyKos Diary Evah! Check this out:
We're within less than 100 recs to break the record!
I know not everyone the rec'd is a supporter, and I want to especially thank them for stepping up. This, I really and truly believe, will inject some excitement into the democratic primary season... and (please wait while I take a break to hope, hope, hope...), if Gore steps up, I can't imagine that there could ever be a more stirring and exciting primary season. If I had anything to say about it, he'd get in for that reason alone - even if he were to withdraw early, the buzz and drama his candidacy would create would simply be off the charts and it would accrue to the larger party's benefit. (Howard Dean would love him for that, and so would the chairs of the DCCC and DSCC).
I hope I haven't said anything that sells Obama's or Clinton's or Vilsack's or Richardson's candidacy's short. Certainly not my intention.
Anyway, I'm updating to let y'all know how close we are to breaking the record. I'd love to shatter it, so if you're reading without logging in, here's your reason to tap the keyboard... If you've got friends that like Gore, here's a reason to email them. I've already had a few people from the press reach out to me and I told them I'd be in touch when I had news. I think we've got about another 2 or 3 hours to go - let's get one final push.
Thanks!!
4th Update [2007-2-12 20:7:11 by Mike Stark]: It's done! Previous record 1280. New record 1466, a 15% increase. I've emailed about 500 press and scores of other influential political types. Start looking for this in the news.
In addition, I've emailed back and forth with the DraftGore team. They've rec'd thousands of signatures since last night. Thousands of dollars too. It's hard to trace inspiration of every petition signature and every donation, but it is clear that DailyKos visitors were mainly responsible for the surge (to coin a phrase).
You are a kick-ass bunch of people and I can't wait for the next election season. Working with y'all is just incredible.
Last Update [2007-2-13 8:45:35 by Mike Stark]: I have it on good authority that Al Gore has heard, or will hear, what y'all have done. I'm sure it's just one more notch in his belt, and probably a fairly insignificant one (considering he's up for the Nobel Prize and and Oscar), but it's nice to know that his ear is to the ground.
