Five years ago this very day, an Army veteran and J.D. from Chicago and El Salvador named Markos Moulitsas Zúniga fired up a new blog. He called it DailyKos - inspired by his Army nickname - and thundered right out the gate:

Day 1

I am progressive. I am liberal. I make no apologies.

Damn straight.

Over the years, this site has grown enormously - in size, breadth and influence. It's become an important force for good. And while Markos frequently (and correctly) observes that DailyKos users are central to this site's success, we wouldn't be here without his leadership and vision.

So please join me in saluting Markos and this community - and in wishing DailyKos a very happy fifth birthday! May there be many, many happy returns!
