The only successful thing BushCo has been able to do in Iraq is get the American traditional media to buy whatever ridiculous justification for the invasion and then "staying the course" they come up with next. Saddam in on 9/11? Sure, sounds plausible. Iraq has WMD? Well, ok, then, we'd better do this thing. Mission accomplished? Huzzah. We did it to liberate the Iraqi people? Sounds plausible. We have to escalate to let the Iraqis stand up so we can stand down? Bully.
On that last point, we all remember what the escalation was supposed to have achieved, right? Think Progress has the reminder from Bush's announcement of the escalation:
When this happens, daily life will improve, Iraqis will gain confidence in their leaders, and the government will have the breathing space it needs to make progress in other critical areas. Most of Iraq’s Sunni and Shia want to live together in peace — and reducing the violence in Baghdad will help make reconciliation possible.
So guess what happened in today's White House press briefing?
White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe disingenuously claimed that the purpose of the surge was simply "to help bring security to Iraq":
QUESTION: Is it still administration policy that the U.S. commitment in Iraq is not open-ended?
JOHNDROE: I think the president has made it clear that he would eventually like to see the United States in a different configuration in Iraq. There’s no doubt about that. The surge was designed, as we have said repeatedly, to help bring security to Iraq.
Surprise, surprise, surprise.
