Sexist as it may be, every four years Family Circle magazine puts on a prospective First Lady cookie recipe contest, and they brag that in the past four presidential elections the winner of the cookie competition's husband won the presidential race (obviously cookie recipes determine "winning" by the terms and conditions of Bush v. Gore 531 U.S. 98 (2000)).
You may recall Cindy McCain taking some heat in April for because the McCain campaign put some fake "McCain family recipes" on his website to soften her image and make her look like a typical human. These recipes were of course not Cindy's, or John's, but the Food Networks, and one from Rachel Ray. As if anyone could actually picture the filthy rich beer heiress getting her hands dirty in the kitchen.
Well, she did it again. This time around it was "Cindy McCain's" oatmeal butterscotch cookies, the recipe she entered against Michelle Obama's recipe for the contest. Only, of course, they weren't Cindy's, they were Hershey's. Bill Clinton also submitted a recipe for "Bill Clinton's oatmeal cookies", before Hillary dropped out, but it turns out that that recipe wasn't Bill's, it was Betty Crocker's.
So Michelle Obama, working mother and total rockstar, is the only one in the competition who actually submitted a genuine recipe that wasn't a complete copy-and-paste job. And needless to say, she deserves to have her shortbread cookies with zest of lemon and orange, and a hint of Amaretto win!
The only problem is that as of the writing of this blog, Cindy McCain's Hershey's cookies are about 100 votes ahead of Michelle's, so we need some help to make sure she wins, and so we can make sure Obama wins in November (not that he needs cookie karma to whip McCain). So, take a minute, go to the website, sign up, and vote for Michelle Obama's cookies! And bookmark the page and vote for her every day, because you can vote once per day, so keep voting til we put her over the top! And then vote some more! Yay democracy!!
Vote for Michelle!
PS: If you need extra motivation, just remember Cindy McCain's snarky "Well I'm proud of my country!" comment. Grrrrr!
Update: We've closed the gap to around 40! Keep the votes coming! If enough of us come back to vote in the next couple of days we will be sure to push Michelle over the top!
Update #2: 24 to go! Cindy McCain has received more votes, or else we would have caught up! Keep them coming! Also, despite nasty GOP attacks against Michelle, and generally unfavorable media coverage, a just-released ABC News/Washington Post poll shows that 48% of Americans view Michelle favorably, to only 39% who view Cindy favorably. My faith in Americans is starting to come back after 8 years of disappointment.
Update #3: Michelle's cookies have shot ahead of Cindy's ripoffs, and now has a 30 point lead! Great work! Keep it coming though, because it appears that the contest doesn't end until right before the election, so we can't get lazy or else Cindy's cookies will rise again. Let's build on Michelle's lead! Remember, you can vote once per day! Bookmark that baby and keep coming back.
Update (6/20): Michelle is up by over 100 now, and the first to break the 1000 mark! WOO!! I'm sure no one is checking this anymore, but great work, keep it up!
