Johnny Mac, the son and grandson of Navy Admirals, who attended the United States Naval Academy on the public's dime, did not appreciate our great country until well into his adulthood. On March 13 as a guest on Hannity and Colmes he said:
"I really didn't love America until I was deprived of her company."
Sean Hannity immediately went ballistic and punched McCain in his face. Oh wait, no he didn't. He proceeded to toss McCain another softball and I'm positive he hasn't mentioned the exchange since.
Lest you think McCain's statement was uttered in a moment of confusion, back on September of 1999, when he actually was a straight talker and hated Bush, he said upon launching his 2000 presidential campaign the same thing virtually word for word:
"I was born into America's service, it wasn't until I was deprived of her company that I fell in love with America.
And again in December of 1999 he said:
"I was not in love with America until I was deprived of her company"
The similarity of the wording indicates that this was actually a talking point.
The obvious inference of this statement is that John McCain hated America his entire childhood, adolescence, and throughout his twenties. It took torture at the hands of the North Vietnamese for McCain to think "you know, America wasn't so bad. I got tortured a lot less over there." This epiphany occurred, by my calculation, when he was 31. If only Michelle Obama had joined the service and was captured and tortured, she would have been proud of her country much sooner.
In all seriousness though, quotes like this reveal the utter shamelessness and stupidity of these right wing nuts. When evaluating John McCain's statements they'll say, "well obviously you have to look at the context of what he was saying, he was in the service, it was just an expression, yadda, yadda, yadda." And no respectable progressive would try and make this into a big deal because that's obvious. And yet when it comes to anything Michelle (or Barack) says, their attitude is completely different, "context, what more context do you need? She said she wasn't proud of her country, that can only be interpreted one way. She's bitter and unappreciative of the country that gave her a Princeton education and a high paying job." You can almost hear them think, "that b*tch should be grateful for Affirmative Action". And so they shamelessly push the story day after day and they ignore any information that contradicts the picture they've painted of Michelle as an angry black woman. Their response after Michelle went on The View and clarified (for the millionth time) what she meant, "now she's just pandering, trying to soften her image. Obviously she can't mean that she's always been proud of this country, because we've already clearly established that she hates America". These guys are the absolute worst, and I think they actively take pride in their ability to sow disinformation. The fact they have listeners scares me. Their poor listeners following their "logic" are like lemmings following their leader off the side of a cliff. Hopefully their idiocy becomes as apparent to all as it is to me.
