A lot of signs right now are at least pointing in the direction of Sarah Palin, Governor of Alaska and former mayor of Wasilla.
Looking at her biography, she'd generally be a great pick. She went up against the corrupt Stevens-Murkowski-Young machine and beat incumbent Gov. Murkowski in a primary in 2006. She's got a high approval rating in Alaska and she comes across great on TV (and, no, I'm not talking about looks here). She's also got an interesting personal story, five kids - the oldest serving in Iraq right now, and the youngest born a couple of months ago with down syndrome.
Sure, there have been reports in her trying to get her former brother-in-law fired but I think that's a minor issue, really.
The big issue is this:
Sarah Palin is inexperienced.
Compared to Palin, Barack Obama is a seasoned and experienced politician. Palin was mayor of the small town of Wasilla just two years ago. Her main qualification is running one of the smallest states (by population) for one and a half years. If it's really McCain/Palin, then McCain's campaign better not utter "inexperienced" again. Cause he'd have a former small town mayor just a heartbeat away from the presidency.
McCain/Palin would take away one the McCain campaign's biggest arguments for McCain: experience.
Is he really that desperate?
