Now that the Senate has finally passed a semi-testicled version of the President's stimulus package, I guess the usual next step is they've got to go to a conference committee with the House, to hash out the differences.
From the excellent reportage here at DKos, I know that Speaker Pelosi has been standing up and fighting the GOP's opium dream of a Magic Tax-cut for the Wealthy to solve all our problems. Wish we could say the same for the Senate, where Harry Reid is apparently still wearing the same suit jacket as last year -- the one with the doormat stitched into the back of it.
Can someone here explain to me why the Senate Republicans could run roughshod over the Constitution and get all that absurd legislation passed and those horrible people into the Judiciary with the barest majority and the merest whisper of a threat to have Cheney come in and drop his Big Tie-breaker, while Harry "Please-don't-hit-me-here's-my-lunch-money" Reid seems paralyzed with "only" 58 votes?
Doesn't the whole supermajority/60-vote thing absolutely depend on the arithmetic of the filibuster and the cloture vote? So where's the smackdown? Where's the "double-dog dare ya"? Where's the backbone to say, "Go ahead and filibuster. While the world financial system grinds to a halt, we'd love to show the American people a few days full of Republicans in their hand-tailored suits and Klaatu Barada neckties, reading recipes and legal codes, telling stories about the good old days before that pesky integration. Be our guest."?
So what did I do with my 500 words to the President? Here you are:
Mr. President, I liked your original Stimulus Package. I feared that, like Clinton, you'd be cowed by phony "Deficit Hawks" to drop it. Now the Senate GOP tries to"nose-job" a bill they won't vote for anyway. Online activists ask me to fight for the bill, call Congress, etc. But I won't. I see Harry Reid w/ a 58 vote majority bending over in the Senate. When Reid fights, I will too. You need him gone yesterday. Are these folks to "compromise" with? Isn't it time to kick A** & take names?
Five hundred words is a limited canvas for the topic, but I think I was pretty clear, that this is not a time for compromise with the uncompromising. Could you do better? What would your five hundred be? Have you sent them to the President yet?
