Many Democrats are delighted with the collapse Jeb Bush’s presidential campaign. It seems to show that the nation has turned its back on the policies of the Bush dynasty.
But it’s just as likely to mean that the public is sick of political dynasties. I realize that Bush lost in the Republican primaries, and not general election, but Donald Trump has brought many new people to the polls. According to a number of news accounts many Trump supporters are people who rarely if ever voted. These are people who are sick of politics, particularly politics as usual. There is the possibility that they represent a broader group of people, people who have not been involved before, but are motivated to get involved now.
If this is true, if this represents a broader trend, it could mean that millions of disillusioned people might go to the polls for the first time. They are rejecting the existing order in the Republican primaries. They could very well reject the existing order in the general election. They rejected the Bush dynasty in the Republican Party, and they could very well reject the Clinton dynasty in the general election.
The end of Jeb Bush could mean that political dynasties are doomed.
