Last Sunday evening, a 36-year-old customer has shot two employees at a Subway restaurant near the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The customer, who has been said to visit this particular Subway multiple times, was angered over the amount of mayonnaise on his sandwich. A store manager unsuccessfully shot back at the firing customer; the customer managed to kill 26-year-old Brittany Macon and wound 24-year-old Jada Statum, who was placing her 5-year-old son under the counter so that he won’t get shot. Statum was sent to hospital in critical condition, although according to Statum’s Uncle, Jada is “doing all right”. Both Macon and Statum are related to each other, and both women started their jobs a few weeks ago. The customer, whose identity has yet to be released as of this writing, was arrested by the Atlanta Police Department, after police received a tip leading to the suspect.
Both the owner and police mentioned that the 5-year-old son of the employee injured was inside during the shooting and witnessed everything.
"We had a customer come in that was a little upset with how his sandwich was fixed," the owner explained. "Believe it or not, it was over too much mayonnaise on his sandwich."
That's when the owner said the man began shooting and a store manager shot back.
He said that the shooter has come in before as a customer; however, he said there hasn't been any issues in the past.
"Because of what happened tonight, my partners and I are reevaluating whether or not we're going to continue to do this, in this neighborhood anyways," the store owner said, noting it's just not worth the risk.
Atlanta interim Chief of Police Darin Schierbaum has spoken on this incident.
Interim Chief Of Police Darin Schierbaum said arguments are the majority cause of homicides in 2022.
“An argument leads to someone picking up a weapon and firing that gun, leaving someone dead or someone critically injured,” Schierbaum said.
Schierbaum feels that people should talk more and use guns less when it comes to handling disputes.
“We need individuals to talk out their disputes, walk away and do not pick up guns. We can take down drug operations that breed violent crime, we can dismantle gang organizations that breed violent crime, we can stop robbery crews that breed violent crime, we cannot stop someone who is mad because there is too much mayonnaise on their sandwich,” said Schierbaum.

The gunman is identified to be 36-year-old Melvin Williams. Back in March of last year, Williams was out on a $10,000 bond after spending 10 days in jail for aggravated assault and third-degree cruelty to children. Per bond order, Williams was not allowed to possess weapons of any kind; it is unknown how he retrieved a gun.
As a result of the fatal Subway shooting, Melvin Williams is now charged with murder, aggravated assault, and “possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony”. Williams is held at the Fulton County Jail without bond.
