I’ve posted previous articles here and here about Hisham Awartani, a junior at Brown University who was shot in Vermont in November in an unprovoked attack and is now a paraplegic with a large bullet lodged in his spine. The good news is that he will be returning to college next semester and live in the dorm.
Tomorrow, he starts back with his college studies, just as he said he would. Hisham will be starting remotely. He is taking classes in math and archaeology. He is having to pause his class-based language studies (Persian and Italian), although he has plans to study Spanish, Italian, and Persian in his "free time". Once back at college, Hisham will continue to work on his body while educating his brain. In the months after a spinal cord injury, the body is trying to heal itself aggressively, so Hisham needs to work hard at rehab.
Hisham will be taking to his dorm some very expensive equipment he has been using at a Spaulding rehabilitation center near Boston, like a $10,000 electrical stimulation bike he will use "to keep his lower-body strong, improve his bone density, and increase his aerobic fitness."
The link will take you to gofundme where you can see pictures of Hisham and his mother on various updates of the page. Today, it reports they have raised $1,660,038 of the $2,000,000 goal from 21,600 donations.
