It’s been a while since I’ve written in this blog, I have in the passed few months gone pretty much inactive in politics due to my work load but this was something I couldn’t pass up writing about especially since the media hasn’t given it much attention. Virginia’s Primary night was dominated by coverage of the GOP primary and the neo-Confederate southern boy wanna be Trump reject Corey Stewart, but the Democratic Congressional Primary in the Fightin’ 9th is really interesting.
Anthony Flaccavento won the first ever primary for the Democratic nomination for the 9th Congressional District in a landslide, the now Democratic nominee has had strong fundraising numbers so far raising almost as much as incumbent GOP Congressman Morgan Griffith each quarter. He also had such a strong democratic turnout that GOP verses Democratic turnout only had about 3,000 votes difference (Dems received 13,677 votes to the GOP’s 16,301 so Dems got about 45.6% of the vote in this district). That’s incredibly close especially when you consider that this district went for Trump by 40 points in 2016 and even in 2017 now Governor Ralph Northam only received 30% here in the general election.
The 9th Congressional was once a Democratic stronghold in Virginia and was represented for 28 years by Congressman Rick Boucher until the 2010 Tea Party wave swept him out. Since Boucher left office the best any Democrat has done in the 9th has been 38% and only two Democrats have been able to do that: now Governor Ralph Northam in his race for Lieutenant Governor in 2013 and Anthony Flaccavento in 2012.
Flaccavento has been holding dozens of townhalls across the district and in the primary it seemed as if his campaign had a ground game everywhere. If there was ever a chance to turn this district blue again it is now.
This is my home district I grew up here all my family lives here, this is an area that really needs a compassionate congressman with some progressive policies. I strongly encourage you to take a serious look at Anthony Flaccavento and has campaign. www.flacc4congress.com
