Project Nexus — Solar Canals
Researchers at UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced last year collaborated in a study published in Nature Sustainability converting the state’s public water distribution system to a network of “solar canals” which would conserve water while boosting the state’s clean renewable energy portfolio. The work, called Project Nexus will begin in 2023.
The research suggests that covering all of California’s canals – spanning roughly 4,000 miles – with solar panels could save up to 63 billion gallons of water and generate 13 gigawatts of renewable power annually. One gigawatt is equal to the energy consumption of 100 million LEDs, or as others put it, enough to power 750,000 homes. www.pbs.org/...
Zero Emission Trucks
The Port of Los Angeles has announced the release of $5 million in voucher incentives for zero-emission trucks to operate at the Port. This marks the first in a series of incentive programs that will be funded by the Port’s recently enacted
Clean Truck Fund (CTF).
“Our port does more than drive America’s economy forward – it shows the world how environmental stewardship and economic prosperity can go hand-in-hand,” said Los Angles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “As we continue to move record cargo, the need for zero-emission solutions has never been more clear – and working in partnership with the California Air Resources Board, we will continue to forge ahead with our work to clean our air and accelerate our transition to zero-emission technologies.”
“We’re pleased to start investing the Clean Truck Fund dollars that we’ve been collecting since April and use them toward a zero-emissions future,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka. “This is the first of many funding initiatives that the Port of Los Angeles has planned as we help begin the transition to the cleanest trucks in the world.”

Kitchen Table Kibitzing is a community series for those who wish to share a virtual kitchen table with other readers of Daily Kos who aren’t throwing pies at one another. Drop by to talk about music, your weather, your garden, or what you cooked for supper…. Newcomers may notice that many who post in this series already know one another to some degree, but we welcome guests at our kitchen table and hope to make some new friends as well.
