As someone who has been engaged in promoting research efforts for rare and chronic disorders, I was disgusted that Sarah Palin used her one attempt at a policy speech to undermine the efforts of basic science research in fruit flies. In her debut, she demonstrated a nearly imbecilic ignorance of how science actually works, astonishing given her father was a science teacher. This should terrify all of us for the future of health and science policy should McCain be elected. Funding for basic science research has all but dried up, largely thanks to the scientifically illiterate who run our country. Individuals engaged in basic science research frequently have to find their own funds or fight tooth and claw for the limited federal resources that are available. They do so because they believe the work is important, not because it is lucrative (at all).
I have carefully avoided publicly expressing political or religious views in my professional life. However, Sarah Palin's comments struck home in a way I could not ignore, so I'm sharing my open letter to her with you good folks at Daily Kos. I've not used the diary feature before, so please forgive me if this is not done correctly.
