I saw Ani Difranco read this poem on a cold February evening in 2002. There was no musical accompaniment; just the artist, a microphone and a few rumpled sheets of paper which she read from. It took a few minutes for the crowd to realize what she was talking about, but it was stone silence after that. There was a long pause after she finished and then a roar from many tear-stained faces.

President Obama,
I write you today to implore you to honor your commitment and keep a robust Public Plan as the cornerstone of any healthcare reform. This issue is very personal to me and I hope that you will indulge me for a moment to explain why this reform is so directly important on an individual level.

My parents had a huge & bizarre LP collection. Nat King Cole next to Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin with Waylon Jennings, Richard Burton reading Shakespeare next to K-Tel’s "Goofy Greats." This diversity shaped my truly strange aesthetic tastes.

But one album stands out today with the passing of the great George Carlin, Class Clown.

In November 1980 I voted in my first Presidential election. I was 10 and it was a 4th grade "mock" election. Each of us wrote our vote on a slip of paper and we stood in a long, awkward conga line as we waited our turn to put our slip in a big cardboard box at the front of the room. Likely I was standing next to a friend of mine named Dave. The two of us came from poor families and had a ridiculous affinity for Billy Joel’s Glass Houses and a certain pretty blonde girl whose name I do not remember to this day. (I’ve outgrown any preference for blondes, pretty much loving women of all varieties, especially the intelligent and compassionate kind. My love of Glass Houses stands.)

When the votes were counted, I knew I was very different from my fellow students. Only 2 votes were cast for Carter. I cast one of them.

I suppose this really isn’t news to the KOS community, but it’s mildly reassuring to see this from a more "traditional/MSM" source. No matter how you read this story, these guys are War Profiteers in the grand old tradition of Prescott Bush. Highlights after the fold.

Obviously, we don’t yet know all of the details of this story from the Kansas City Star, but we know this:

In court records filed with the charges, police say Reimer killed his wife because he no longer could afford the avalanche of medical bills from the treatment of her uterine cancer and neurological problems.

When police first questioned Reimer, who was in the apartment when they arrived, he told them "something bad" had happened to his wife, according to the probable-cause statement filed with the charges.

"She didn’t jump," he said, but didn’t reveal much more.

I, as I suspect the rest of the Kos community, get multiple "action item" emails a day from MoveOn and Working Assests and every Progressive or Democratic organization with an ax to grind. Like a progressive, Pavlovian dog, I bark in agreement and hit the submit button, sending some prewritten email to my congress critters. I know I should personalize the screed, or at least change the subject line, but hey, I’m a busy guy. I have: 2 jobs, a wife, 2 children, currently 3 mortgages and I live in Missouri.
