A few years ago, I joined a new Knights of Columbus council at my church, because I thought that would be a great way to get more involved in the parish. However, I quickly stopped reading the monthly magazine, because it was too distressing -- particularly all the anti-choice material.
When I moved cross-country, I quickly signed up with a local council, to provide some more continuity. However, I don't remember if I ever actually paid my dues to them, being chronically short of money. By this time, I should definitely have been suspended for non-payment, but I've still been on their email list for events.
However, I just requested that they take me off the list: the K of C is running a petition drive against same-sex marriage in Maine over the next two weekends. While I could deal with the anti-choice material, since that was deeply rooted in the Church's teachings, this strikes me as just meddling, and none of their business. "Defending marriage" by preventing it is a ridiculous concept, and closing adoption agencies so they won't have to comply with the law shows that they're more interested in gay-bashing than the well-being of children. I'm not going to be a party to this any longer, even by implication.
