I am a great admirer of Doctors without Borders aka MSF who risk their lives and expend huge efforts to provide medical help wherever needed in the world. In particular, they are present in Third World or poor countries whose medical facilities are weak. I certainly do not begrudge the pueblos and the Navajo Nation the help they can obtain from whatever source but one might expect the federal government and the state of New Mexico to provide the needed support without diverting MSF resources that would be better used in Nigeria or Cambodia for example. We note that Native Americans are 11% of the population of New Mexico and 56% of the Covid victims. The same can be said of the other worthy activities of MSF in the USA, such as homeless people in New York and migrant farm workers in Florida who are continuing to work despite the pandemic,
I ask myself, as an American expat living in Israel and enjoying a single payer national health service, what is wrong with my native land? I think that the late Richard Hofstader nailed it in his reaction to the nomination of Goldwater in 1964 over the moderate Rockefeller. In his essay, The Paranoid Style in American Politics, which he defines as “heated exaggeration, suspiciousness, and conspiratorial fantasy.” Another source is the neo-liberal ideology of today’s Republican Party which promotes a “me,me,me” attitude This is not unique to the US, vid. Thatcherism in the UK that held that there is no social compact and indeed there is no such thing as society. The result is a powerful country unable or unwilling to provide basic services to its people, especially those on the margins and in the lower socio-economic strata.
For shame indeed!
