“It's happening, Reg! Something's actually happening, Reg! Can't you understand?! Ohhh!”
Committee, Scene 23
The year 2017 was a time for licking our collective wounds and trying to figure out how to counteract the horror of 11/9/2017. If the tax bill and the seven deadly CDC words haven’t sent you to the hardware store to stock up on pitchforks, I don’t know what else will. The current administration, and its toadies in Congress, have declared war on women, workers, the environment, the poor, the sick, the disabled, people of color, immigrants, science, our allies, entire religions, education, energy policy, climate change, the First Amendment, protesters, democracy, and the rule of law. If I left something out, please correct me.
Where I live, in east central Missouri, there is a debate going on about whether to back our current Democratic party Senator Claire McCaskill, for re-election in 2018, or have a Berniecrat make a serious run against her in the primary. I love Bernie with all my heart, yes I do, but “It’s happening, Reg!” We have to stop sitting around and doing things that splinter the party. Are there Russian trolls everywhere?
We need to get out and do the work of showing unity and strength in the face of the enemy. Insert Winston Churchill’s speech here. We shall go on to the end. For those of you who are already engaged in these mighty tasks, I salute you.
On Wednesday, December 13, Doug Jones’ win in Alabama restored my faith in the system. My celebration dance was to “One Nation under a Groove.” One Nation... If we unite, if we understand that we are all in this together, we have a chance to reverse the evil.
To quote another song, “This is How We Do It” regarding Doug Jones’ victory, let’s learn from his example. We should register, register, register voters like our lives depend on it. They do. Then run the GOTV effort like we mean business. We do.
