I went to bed last night after 1AM feeling pretty good about America--even after watching 5 hours of MSNBC coverage! This morning I awoke really feeling happy, content, hopeful, relieved, vindicated. As I examined these range of emotions I realized that it was kind of odd knowing that a primary election could have that kind of effect on me personally. And it struck me that this positive connection--between public politics and private emotional investment--was a very deep and significant thing. It means that abstract concepts like hope and change are what I'll call crystallizing agents, and the first step in getting America (and possibly the world) back on track is feeling connected to a public process in a real, visceral/emotional and yes, intellectual, way.
