Democracy Now is seeking support in attempting to get the charges against Amy Goodman, Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar dropped.

Today it is critical that you make your voice heard in the Ramsey County Attorney and St. Paul City Attorney offices. Demand that they drop all pending and current charges against journalists arrested while reporting on protests outside the Republican National Conventions.

On May 9th George W. Bush quietly signed a presidential directive, the National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive. This directive according to Jerome Corsi (co-author of the book critical of John Kerry's service in Vietnam, Unfit for Command) at World Net Daily

loosely defines "catastrophic emergency" as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions."

When the president determines a catastrophic emergency has occurred, the president can take over all government functions and direct all private sector activities to ensure we will emerge from the emergency with an "enduring constitutional government."

I frequently read and listen to conservative views. My own viewpoints are decidedly liberal, but I find it boring to listen to people that agree with me. How can you effectively argue against the policies of your rivals unless you understand their reasoning and talking points.

Daniel Byman and Kenneth Pollock of the Brookings Institution have authored a cheerfully titled report, THINGS FALL APART: CONTAINING THE SPILLOVER FROM AN IRAQI CIVIL WAR. In it they argue that America has no choice but to prepare to contain an all out civil war in war in Iraq. Unfortunately, their own assessment, based on a study of civil wars over the last 30 years, notes,

The historical record of states that attempted to minimize or contain spillover from all-out civil wars is poor. Nearly all of them failed to do so. Those that "succeeded" often paid such a high cost as to render their victories pyrrhic. In many cases, states failed so miserably to prevent spillover that they were eventually forced to mount massive invasions to attempt to end the civil war instead.
