Regarding Holechek and Briske, and Rebuttals by Teague, Gill & Savory: Correcting Misconceptions about the Supposed Discrediting of Savory’s Approach
I am re-posting here on DailyKos a paper I wrote in 2011 regarding the supposed discrediting of Allan Savory's work by Holechek (2000) and Briske (2008). Careful investigation shows that the criticisms of Holechek and Briske are miscast. Their synthesis studies, it turns out, are not of Savory's (1999) methods at all (Holistic Management and Planned Grazing), but of fixed grazing systems (such as "rotational" and "short duration"), that are executed according to predetermined schedules, without ecological goals, and without adaptive management - the complete opposite of what Savory espouses. Thus, the studies cited by Holechek and Briske do not disprove Savory, but, to the contrary, actually support his thesis - that fixed grazing systems of that sort, that are not holistic, nor executed toward ecological goals, will invariably be deleterious. Continued reliance on Holechek and Briske as being representative of the efficacy of Savory's work is impeding proper scientific analysis of this innovative approach to grassland restoration. Detailed rebuttals are provided by Gill (2008) and Teague (2011).
