I just came from a grocery store in Southern California where signature gatherers are asking shoppers to sign "to prevent the politicians from gerrymandering." Of course it is no such thing, it is to overturn the map drawn by the Citizen's Redistricting Commission.
When I pointed that out, I was assured by "Tom" (wouldn't give last name) that it wasn't. I read the petition to him, which made it clear it was. He sent me to talk to the gatherers at the other door. A man who wouldn't give his name or the group he was gathering for, (but told me he went to law school 30 years ago) assured me it was to prevent gerrymandering by politicians. It went something like this afterward:
Me: "The map wasn't drawn by politicians, it was drawn by the citizen's commission. You're misinforming people."
Sig gatherer: "We're not misinforming. That group is partisan and was bribed."
Me: "Do you have proof they were bribed?"
Sig gatherer:"Do you have proof they weren't?"
Me: "That's ridiculous. You can't prove a negative. I can't prove you aren't a criminal, either."
A few more back and forths where he tried to get me to go away, and threatened me with prison for "interfering with signature gathering."
Sig gatherer: "You're a whack job. You're a radical nut."
Me: "I'm an informed citizen who doesn't like you misinforming people."
So the question - how do I report this and to who?
