If Bush is making his supposedly heroic response to 9/11 one of the centerpieces of his campaign, why do we not have a right to ask (re: 9/11 commission report, Elizabeth Drew in latest NYRB, Bill Moyer's NOW last Friday):
Why was terrorism clearly downgraded as a national security concern early in your administration?
Why were no high level meetings on the subject held until it was too late?
Why did you remain on vacation for 23 days after the August 6 PDB, and hold no further meetings related to this subject? Why did you not ensure that the Homeland was hardened against attack?
Why the complete chaos and confusion of your response to the attacks on 9/11?
Why, in fact, were you asleep
