From the Press Release:
"Western North Carolina News Network (WNCNN), created by local political organizer, Gordon D. Smith, is political satire presented as a cable news program in the vein of Steven Colbert's The Colbert Report and Jon Stewart's The Daily Show. WNCNN will air weekly on Mondays on numerous internet sites including YouTube.com beginning on September 18, 2006. The series intends to highlight the shortcomings of Republican incumbent Congressman Charles H. Taylor through the use of satire, sarcasm, and visual humor.
Heath Shuler's fundraising for his race against Charles Taylor has been nothing short of stupendous. Outraising Taylor and spending less left Shuler with nearly three times as much cash on hand as the disreputable incumbent.
In what has become a perennial campaign habit, Charles Taylor took out two loans for his campaign totaling $850,000. That is, he's borrowing money from an unnamed bank to run against Shuler. Any candidate who gives more than $350,000 of his own money invokes the so-called Millionaire Rule.
The 450-seat Thomas Auditorium on the campus of Blue Ridge Community College in Flat Rock, NC was at least 3/4 full. White people from all over came to hear white people talk about how to have fewer brown people in our country. The two-hour "Immigration Town Hall Meeting" was paid for with your tax dollars, and I didn't hear a voice of dissent all night long. The Taylor for Congress team was there shooting footage for advertisements both during and after the event - call it government subsidized campaigning.
Press Secretary Deborah Potter came up to me, and though we'd never met, said, "Screwy, how are you. You lambasted me...". Ms. Potter was very nice, some might say flirtatious. She couldn't keep her eyes off of me for the first half-hour of the show, and she later told me, "behave yourself" after giggling at the famed Hooligan wit. See this dramatized video capture of Ms. Potter striding into the meeting. Read More
There's so much news on our race in NC-11 that it's hard to keep up. The Heath Shuler campaign, the Charles Taylor campaign, the DCCC, the ATLA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce have all run television ads already. As the money and media buys roll in, so does the coverage.
The right-wing blogosphere has discovered the race, and they're shouting into the ether with posts like this one from "The American Thinker": "Shuler has been going negative against Taylor on TV for a while now, which might be effecting poll numbers, but that's nothing new. They've gone negative on Taylor many times before, so much so that a local right wing paper notes you can tell it is an election year when the area's left wing "alternative" press, our local equivalent to the Chicago Reporter, finds some new charge to bring against Taylor." "Please join me and our special guest, Congressman Tom Tancredo (R-CO), at an Immigration Town Hall Meeting taking place on Saturday, September 9th from 5:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Thomas Auditorium in the David W. Sink, Jr. Building, located at Blue Ridge Community College's main campus in Henderson County."
But in 93 days America has a choice. Voters across North Carolina have a choice. But the Mighty Wurlitzer of the Republican Noise Machine is gearing up, as usual, to paint Democrats like Ned Lamont as "insurgents", to scare voters with cries of doom if they vote for Democrats, to ignore the central role Republicans like Robin Hayes and Charles Taylor have played in the failure of the Bush administration. Republicans want voters to stay the course and keep the can't-shoot-straight gang in power for another two years. Read More
And now, thanks to the deviant minds behind www.taylorsucks.org, Taylor's ad has been remixed to more accurately indicate who's who in this race.

"Friends, I have some great news to share with you today. Just yesterday the Cook Political Report, one of the most respected political newsletters in the country, moved our race from "Leans Republican" into the "Toss-Up" category. This is excellent news for the campaign and another sign of our growing momentum.

My battery may get me through the whole event, so updates will be available as long as the power is on.
At 6:30pm 30 people have already gathered. A store employee leaned over to me a moment ago to let me know he would be unplugging the computers and disabling the wireless connection. Both Brainshrub and I let him know that it probably wasn't a good idea.
More at 7pm. --- UPDATES after the jump --- Read More
