I've seen lots of posts about the sick and disturbed person who committed these crimes. I've seen posts about how George W. Bush has handled this. I've seen angry posts about gun control and mental illness care. But I've seen little about the victims.

So forgive me for a bit of a preachy diary that isn't dealing with politics, but I think it's important.

I just got back from my first John Edwards townhall meeting. I got on the bandwagen a little late in 2004, so I only saw a few pre-caucus speeches and rallys. And I thought it might be interesting to share some of what went on.

I was watching an MSNBC special last night and it reminded me that it's been over two months since Katrina. I know there's lots to focus on now----the elections in Virginia, the Supreme Court, and the Libby mess.

But it's worth remembering that one of the worst screw ups in all levels of government occured not that long ago. It's been easy to forget about, but it's so important that we all remember what happened and work on figuring out why. And while Michael Brown is taking all of the blame, it's important to remember WHY he is taking the blame.

And finally, if you haven't in a while donate to a charity of your choice. I'm sure there are still thousands of people that still need assistance.

I've had lots of discussion with people about this. One one website, there's been a lot of people that refuse to hold the Federal gov't responsible. Saying that FEMA is not meant to be the 1st responders (one even said that FEMA didn't get to Hurricane Andrew until 8 days AFTER the storm) and they are not supposed to do much of anything.

I disagree with this, but they have their talking points. And I refuse to let the Federal gov't get off the hook of this one. I can't let it happen. There's a lot of blame to go around, to be fair, but I will not let FEMA turn this into a state thing. Read More

It seems a little sick and wrong to analyze the politcs of this, but I think it's very interesting.

First, almost to a person in the media, the journalists on the ground are really talking about poverty. We must use this to open up an important discussion on poverty. This is something that we have advantages of and the fact that we saw actual groups of people is a moving and disturbing image. We saw what 30% of a city in poverty looks like and they all weren't tucked away either in their homes or serving us when we visited New Orelans. This shouldn't be labled as a political issue, but a human issue. And quite frankly it is. Read More

I've read a lot on here why Dean should be our chair. There's lots of good reasons for it. I like him, he's fiesty and amusing. He speaks the truth, no matter what the consequences are. Many of you were pulled back into politics because of him. You are very loyal. But I think he's a bad choice for head of our party. Read More
