This is not a nuanced electorate. They do not care that the most emails in question were not classified when they were on you server but were retroactive classified months after you left; so there was nothing you could have done. They don't get that when the director of the FBI said he felt many should have been classified, actually means that they were actually not classified. They don't care that the 8 or so that were marked as classified shouldn't have been marked at all. We all know that the fact that everyone was doing it does not mean it is okay. That the Bush White House destroyed millions of emails on a private server is irrelevant for whatever reason. This is way too complicated for the electorate.
Stop at just saying you are sorry and that you recognize that it was a mistake.
It won't even help to say, that because they were on your server, in itself does not imply anything, other than that they were on your server.
But saying you were exonerated is not helping. You were indicted on the email server scandal by the electorate before any details were out. You will remain indicted forever in spite of any reference to reality. You have to win anyway.
My advice “I was wrong, I'm sorry” move on.
