President Bush better start looking at that question long and hard.
We know: The change of focus from Afghanistan to Iraq was a mistake. And, many said it well in advance, not hindsight.
But, for argument's sake: Let's say that GWBush & his staff truly believed they had compelling information of a threat from Saddam Hussein as well as a viable liberation plan for Iraq. Again, in hindsight they know for a fact they were wrong, but let's just talk about the "at that moment" time period.
But now, with General David Petraeus' response to Senator Warner's question whether the current strategy in Iraq makes America safer ...
Sir, I don't know actually.
With that response, any/all further actions in Iraq is a gamble. And though Bush would never admit he's been gambling with our soldiers' lives and our country's integrity in Iraq, he cannot escape that with his top general's uncertainty about the strategy, every day hereafter is definitely a gamble.
Democrats in Congress need to focus on this point now. Don't argue what's been wrong all along, just repeat what it is we know now: "Every day forward is President Bush's War Gamble."
