Four fourteen months, Democrats bargained away cost-cutting proposals
in hopes of garnering the votes of slpppery Charles Grasley and the two senators from Maine.
So respectful were they of Republican sensibilities, that the Democrats did not even permit single payer advocates to testify.
Then they accepted more than 270 Republican amendments, many of which protected special interests and kept costs high.
They borrowed the heart of the 1993 GOP plan and the Romney Plan-- individual mandates to buy insurance and channelling everything through insurance companies.
Now the massive Republican information machine is complaining that this landmark legislation does not cut costs enough!!
