There will be many exegeses of this week's "Meet the Prez". Here is but one of them.

The first half of the quote is what himself said; the second half is the fantasy slip-up we live to die for.

The Intel Commission: "The commission I set up, Tim, is one that will help future presidents understand how best to fight the war on terror, not a way for me to deflect criticism from my miserable failure in Iraq."

George Tenet: "First of all, I strongly believe the CIA is ably led by George Tenet. The fact that he has pics of me doing lines of coke is immaterial."

The 9/11 Commission: "We have given extraordinary cooperation with Chairmen Kean and Hamilton, except when they got too close to the stuff I'm covering up."

David Kay: " I expected there to be stockpiles of weapons. But David Kay has found the capacity to produce weapons: two air balloon machines, and some metal thingy buried in some guy's backyard."

Imminent Threat?: "I believe it is essential that when we see a threat, we deal with those threats before they become imminent. It's too late if they become imminent. For example, you might punch me in the nose, Tim. Therefore, I will kill you now."

Containment?: "Containment doesn't work with a man who is a madman, at least not for longer than twelve years. We've got 6 years left on Kim in North Korea."

Who Knew?: "I went to Congress with the same intelligence that my predecessor, what's his name, had. And all of us, except 25 Senators and 130 Congressmen and Howard Dean and millions of Americans and Europeans, made the judgment that Saddam Hussein needed to be removed."

Resolution 1441: "You remember U.N. Security Council Resolution 1441 clearly stated 'show us your arms and destroy them, or your programs and destroy them.' Saddam let the inspectors in, but he didn't say pretty please and show me his ass, so I attacked."

Rebuilding Iraq: "There is a lot of participation by the international community in restoring the infrastructure of Iraq that Saddam Hussein and we destroyed, countries like Kuwait."

Dead Soldiers: "For the parents of the soldiers who have fallen who are listening, David Kay, the weapons inspector, came back and said, 'In many ways Iraq is more dangerous than we thought, now that no one is in charge.' "

Why We Go to War: "We have found a responsibility to fight AIDS; oops, my brain just fried."

AWOL?: "I would be careful to not denigrate the Guard, like I did by not showing up for months on end."

Calling Gary Hart: "There may be no evidence on my serving in Alabama, but I did report; otherwise, I wouldn't have been honorably discharged. Go ahead, try and prove that I'm lying."

Balancing the Budget: "The budget I just proposed to the Congress cuts the deficit in half in five years, if you don't include a half trillion for Iraq and a half trillion for making my beloved tax cuts permanent."

Unemployment: "See, I'm more worried about the fellow looking for the job. That fellow is me."

Democrats Eat Babies: "They want to raise taxes of families with children, they want to increase the marriage penalty. They is like one guy from Vermont."

How do you know Bush is lying? His lips are moving.

Right to the Moon Alice

President Bush apparently has decided to go back to the Moon. Did he ever leave? Will he stay there? We can only hope.

Why does he want to go back to the Moon? To find Moon Maid on the other side?

What a dork is Dubya.

Mr. President: I was alive when Jack Kennedy was President. You sir, are no Jack Kennedy. Can't you come up with one stinking new idea?

Mr. President: instead of going to the Moon, could you spend some borrowed money on homeland security and teacher's salaries? How about testing meat before it gets into our hamburgers?

Sorry, but the vision thing doesn't translate to you. As possibly the only living example of a BSE survivor, you just don't have any credibility with Americans anymore. Go back to Crawford and crawl in your spiderhole.

In the library of Oak Hill Elementary School in the Kansas City suburb of Overland Park, Kan., one set of books gets used more than most: the almanacs.

"For class work and even for fun, the kids love to sit and read them for hours," said Sharon Coatney, the school's librarian. "Children are fascinated with trivia and new things. They love to ask each other 'Did you know such and such?' and almanacs give them a lot of such and suches."

Almanac publishers have counted on schools to introduce new generations of buyers to their books. Even in the era of CD-ROMs and the Internet, with their promise of vast storehouses of information, publishers remain enthusiastic about the business of almanacs, especially general-interest books like the World Almanac and Book of Facts and the Information Please Almanac.

Two big publishers entered the almanac market this year, bringing out The Wall Street Journal Almanac and The New York Times Almanac.

The economics of almanacs is appealing to publishers, because they can bring out new books every year at a relatively low cost. Although each year's edition will include new articles and other updated information, much of the data can be recycled from year to year. Moreover, although almanac sales are quite large by publishing standards, there are no big-name authors demanding huge advances and royalties.

There is, of course, a wide variety of almanacs available, with some focusing mainly on sports or entertainment -- or on the weather as the Old Farmer's Almanac does. But the most popular are the general-interest almanacs, which compile hundreds of thousands of facts about a broad range of topics, from abortion to the zodiac. An estimated 2 million of these almanacs are sold each year, for less than $11 apiece.

Why is Cheney so adamant about not letting anybody see the guest list, let alone the contents of his Energy Task Force meeting?

Could it have anything to do with plans for the Iraq war?

Much has been made about the trans-Afghani pipeline project (which has Enron connections). I wonder if this was discussed "amongst friends".

This administration is so dirty, and the media is so inept, it makes me want to puke.

I am completely flabbergasted, disgusted, furious, you name it. Read the above article, and think about the people that died that day. Then think about Bush's coverup of 9-11, and his administration's stonewalling of its investigation. Then answer two questions:

Why has Bush not been impeached?
Why are we letting him get away with the coverup?

This article is very well researched. It is not some conspiracy loony tune site. It is right on the money. Read it, and think about who is in the White House right now, bragging about how tough he is.

This is what Bush is scared of most: that we will find out what really happened on 9-11. If the American people really knew the truth, I don't think he would even be nominated for re-election.

The Meaning of National Security

Lately, it seems as if General Clark, in comparison to the other democratic candidates, has been exceptionally prescient about what the fundamental issues will be in the upcoming presidential election. Specifically, General Clark has repeatedly said that domestic issues notwithstanding, the upcoming election will primarily be about national security, about who is best qualified to lead our nation through the expected troubles ahead.

It occurred to me that the issue of national security is multilayered, that national security is not only about guns, bombs and spiderholes, but is also about other things, some close to home.

One of the biggest problems I have with Bush is that I never know when he is lying and when he is telling the truth. (Assume for the sake of argument that he does sometimes tell the truth. Also, as the General has pointed out, whoever speaks for Bush is Bush speaking: no buck passing.) Right now, as we experience yet another Orange Alert (it sounds like something you would buy at a Dairy Freeze), David Letterman nightly makes fun of it, like it's some kind of joke. The implicit point of his ridicule is that Bush is probably lying, but why?

Rather than digress on whether the current Orange Alert is a stunt, or a real alert, the real point here is that Bush has no credibility. If you lie to the nation about the reasons for going to war, who will believe you when you cry wolf later? My point is that credibility goes to the heart of national security. Bush's lying ways make us less safe.

Of course, we are less safe in a practical sense, because the 250 billion dollars we have and will spend on Iraq cannot be spent on helping defend the homeland. The money we have spent on homeland security is a pittance. This is clearly an underreported issue of national security. Again, we are less safe.

What about Bush's profligate spending and taxing policies that have created 500 to 750 billion dollar deficits for the foreseeable future? Stop and consider that as a nation, we would quickly go bankrupt if no one bought our securities, or they were all cashed in. But who buys up our debt, year after year? The Chinese, of course, even as they manipulate their currency to destroy our manufacturing base. Keep in mind that the 21st Century will be their century, and part of this reason this will happen is they will own us through the debt they are carrying for us. This relationship is insidious, and could very well be the downfall of the United States as a world power. How could this not be considered an issue of national security? Again, we are less safe.

Bush points to the "improving" economy as a reason for reelecting him, conveniently forgetting to mention that the uptick observed is the direct result of consumer spending of tax rebates paid for with borrowed money. If you lose your job, the first thing you do is not go out and max out your credit cards. Lost in the whole discussion of the "improving" economy is the issue of the permanent loss of manufacturing jobs. It isn't just that the replacement service jobs pay less, so the middle class is getting screwed again, it's that the loss of manufacturing jobs is a major blow to national security. What happens when we don't make airplanes anymore? What happens when we don't make steel anymore? We don't make computers anymore. If China invades Taiwan, where will we buy computers? Think about it. Again, we are less safe.

Last but certainly not least, there is the issue of international cooperation. Bush has ruined our relationship with "Old Europe", a group of nations comprising 320 million people, more people than in the United States. How can we be safer, when we insult the very people that are critical to our fighting the real war on terror, you know, the one involving Osama bin Laden? We are distracted by Bush et al suggesting that anyone who says we are not safer for having captured Saddam is both an idiot and a traitor, but then within the space of a week, Ridge issues a Orange Alert saying that we are as vulnerable to attack as we were pre 9/11. What a contradiction. Who's the stupid one here?

The real question should not be "Are we safer today than the day after 9/11?" The real question should be "Are we safer now than when Clinton was president?" To me the answer is obvious. Osama notwithstanding, the policies of Bush and his oil baron cronies have made us considerably less safe.

For national security reasons alone, Bush needs to be removed from office.
