This will be a short diary. The following report from The Real News shows unambiguously that reports of over 60% turnout in the recent Honduran elections were a deliberate fraud, enabled by the U.S. dominated corporate media and the National Democratic Institue, an organization affiliated with the Democratic Party in the U.S. that observed the elections.

A recent diary raised the question of whether or not a revolution in Iran was desirable. The argument of the diarist was that "internal" revolutions never make things better, but only make them worse. It generated an interesting discussion of a whole variety of questions and I was pleased to see that most Kossacks rejected the argument.

The events in Iran are exciting not just because of the prospects they raise for the Iranian people, but precisely because they put the general question of revolution before the eyes of people all around the world.

While some people are worried about the prospect of another revolution in Iran for essentially conservative reasons ("all revolutions end badly") there are some on the more radical left who are opposed to a revolution on supposedly "anti-imperialist" grounds. As a proud member of the "far left" and as someone who takes quite seriously the need to support those who fight U.S. imperialism, I was pleased to see A Question Over Iran: Can the People Make History or Not? by Mike Ely on the Kasama blog.

After a ten-day stalemate the democratically elected Maoist government of Nepal has finally removed the head of the Nepal Army, Rookmangud Katawal, the
Guardian is reporting.

At issue is the fulfillment of the 2006 peace agreement which guaranteed the integration of the 19,000 troops of the Maoist's Peoples Liberation Army into the the former Royal Nepali Army and the basic principle of civilian control over the armed forces.

Yesterday, based on the reports appearing on KasamaI diaried on the rapidly developing Fight Over Civilian Control of Army in Nepal. I recounted how the democratically elected Maoist government of Nepal was confronting a series of instances of defiance by the Nepali Army of the basic principles of civilian control and was sabotaging the integration of the NA with the Maoists PLA provided for in the 2006 peace accords.

Now there is news indicating that the showdown was precipitated by a coup plot apparently involving almost the whole upper echelon of the NA's command structure.

There is a showdown shaping up in Nepal between the elected Maoist government and the former Royal Nepali Army, the main obstacle to getting rid of all the rotten feudal relations that keep the vast majority of Nepali's trapped in poverty. As is being reported and discussed on Kasama:

A series of events have sharpened the confrontation between the Maoists of Nepal and the high command of the National Army (which is the reactionary army formed to serve the now-overthrown monarchy.) The Nepali government, headed by Maoists, has demanded that the National Army submit to civilian control (and to a program of transformation and "democraticization"). This has been resisted at each point, exposing the Army’s class character and its anti-revolutionary intentions to a wide section of the public. Now, the Maoist government is pushing the matter — seeking to remove die-hard generals, and setting a date this summer for the completion of the demanded transformation.

except the Vietnamese fighting to drive the American invaders from their country. Obama's inaugural address had much to recommend it, certainly by the standards of the genre, but I practically choked on my pastry when he said:

"For us, they fought and died in places like Concord and Gettysburg, Normandy and Khe Sahn"

Not for me, I thought. Sometimes soldiers fight and die in vain. For instance when their mission is both a losing one and morally indefensible, as it was in Viet Nam.

As anybody who has read my diaries or comments knows I am not exactly forgiving of Obama's cabinet picks or general corporate centrist trajectory.

I find myself, however, responding somewhat differently to the choice of Rick Warren to give the invocation at the inauguration.

Recent events in Zimbabwe have once again captured international attention. This is a situation that has always left me feeling somewhat conflicted. It is quite clear that Robert Mugabe, despite his heroic role in the overthrow of white rule, has become an authoritarian demagogue who has run his country into a ditch.

At the same time I have always felt uncomfortable with how the situation in Zimbabwe has been discussed in the Western media. It always seemed to that whatever Mugabe's demagogic purposes that Zimbabwe was a country in profound need of radical land reform to undo the persistent effects of colonialism and white settler rule.

The glee with which some denounced Mugabe and saw in him confirmation that Zimbabwe's plight could not be blamed any longer on European colonialism had the troubling whiff of racism.

I was please then to read a recent article by Mahmood Mandami that does much to correct popular misconceptions about the situation in Zimbabwe.
