There is no good reason for a civilian to own a gunshot sound suppressor
So why is the GOP open to easing existing restrictions on gun silencers?
Because the GOP is being paid — and/or threatened — by the NRA, the lobby of the gun manufacturers.
“In the House, 16 Democrats and 189 Republicans received a contribution from the NRA; in the Senate, 4 Democrats and 38 Republicans got cash from the pro-gun organization.
With 47% of the House receiving measures of support from the NRA, any attempt at passing meaningful gun control legislation will be inherently difficult.”
Here's Who Gets The Most Campaign Money From The NRA
Since 1998, federal legislators have received somewhere around four million dollars from the NRA.
Which may not seem like a lot of money, but there are also other firearm lobbyists weighing in — guess who helped write this new legislation?
The nice people who want to sell a hell of a lot more firearm silencers!

Backed by the NRA, of course.
The Gun Lobby Wants to Deregulate Gun Silencers – and Republicans Want to Help
The NRA has tons of money, which they also have threatened to use to “primary” any legislators who don't bend to their will.
Five Reasons The NRA Won The Recent Gun Control Debate That Have Nothing To Do With Politics
In addition, the NRA has no compunction about spreading specious propaganda talking points.
I originally wrote this in response to answers on Quora written by silencer proponents: using almost exactly the same language and talking points.

90% of Americans, 92% of gun owners and 74% of NRA members support universal background checks before gun sales, according to polls.
90% of Americans back background checks for all gun sales?
Poll: 92 percent of gun owners support universal background checks
But we're not going to get that from the craven and cowardly GOP.
However, even if the public never asked for — or wants — the More Silencers Law, the GOP probably will bow to their corporate gun masters and vote for it.
If only at a later date when fewer Americans have been recently murdered.
