And, at least one Democratic candidate for the US Senate, has already slammed Chafee for his vote:
Sheldon Whitehouse Statement on Chafee Vote for Cloture on Patriot Act (Cranston, RI) -- On the same day that it is revealed that President Bush has secretly permitted the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on U.S. citizens without the use of a warrant, Lincoln Chafee stood with President Bush and Dick Cheney to support the reauthorization of the flawed Patriot Act.
In yet another sign that Sen. Lincoln Chafee's (R-R.I.) election prospects are in doubt, the National Education Association (NEA) is "seriously considering" endorsing him in the GOP primary, the head of the organization's Rhode Island chapter said yesterday. Bob Walsh, the chapter's executive director, said that Chafee's primary opponent, Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey (R), would have plenty of money and that recent television ads run by the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) had led political insiders to worry about the senator's odds. Walsh said the education group also is strongly leaning toward backing Democrat Sheldon Whitehouse in his primary against Secretary of State Matt Brown and former Marine Capt. Carl Sheeler.

Political insiders -- at least the hard-core already obsessed with the early skirmishing over next year's congressional elections -- are on high alert for a key conservative endorsement of a challenge to a Republican incumbent.
Stop Alito Nomination It is apparent that President Bush's nominee for the Supreme Court to replace Sandra Day O'Connor, Samuel Alito, is not only anti-choice, but an actual strategist in undermining Roe v. Wade. I strongly oppose this nominee. In light of these extraordinary circumstances, I urge Senator Chafee to reconsider his statement that he will not support a filibuster.

From the Chafee for Senate campaign:
Now that he has withdrawn the disputed no-bid contract with Nestor to oversee traffic surveillance for the City of Cranston, it is time for Mayor Laffey to return the tainted contributions received from Nestor officials for his U.S. Senate race.
From November 8th Roll Call:
Laffey will "talk to anyone" who seeks an interview, [his spokeswoman] said. "We're moving forward on his message."
from the AP:
A spokeswoman for Chafee's opponent in the Republican primary, Cranston Mayor Stephen Laffey, said Laffey was too busy with city business to talk about Alito's nomination. Laffey also declined to be interviewed about Roberts' or Miers' nomination.
Chafee had used the term "red flag" in interviews Monday and Tuesday on his concerns about the appellate judge from New Jersey. Yesterday he told reporters, "It's a little too early to say 'red flags.' Caution flags, maybe."... Yesterday, Chafee painted a picture for reporters of his private encounter with Alito. "As a horseman, I know the first step when you meet a horse is to take it easy, take it slow," said Chafee. "Don't be too aggressive." He said he followed that formula yesterday morning when he met the new Supreme Court nominee in a room near the Senate Chamber.

The ProJo covers the ad here.
National Republicans have reduced Cranston Mayor Stephen P. Laffey to a cartoon character who does "BIZARRE!" things. A new 30-second TV spot, highlighting "The Strange Adventures of Steve Laffey," portrays the mayor as an Inspector Gadget-like character who "spent tax dollars" to sound-proof his own office and install cameras to spy on city workers.

Chafee said he has told Republican Senate leaders, including Sen. Elizabeth Dole, chairwoman of the GOP campaign committee that is helping his reelection campaign, that he will join them in support of Roberts. "My party says that's a smart move," Chafee said.
What a puppet! HaHaHaHaHa!
"As someone who has argued before the United States Supreme Court on behalf of the people of Rhode Island, I have the highest respect and appreciation for the nation's highest judicial body....I believe that nominees who go before the Senate for an appointment to the Supreme Court in this environment have an obligation to tell the American people where they stand on fundamental issues. John Roberts has not fulfilled this obligation. Therefore, with regret, because I believe that Judge Roberts is intellectually qualified to serve on the Supreme Court, after careful consideration I would oppose President Bush's nominee to serve for life as Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court."
I bet you that Chafee votes to confirm Roberts.
U.S. Senate Primary Election REP - Lincoln Chafee leads Stephen Laffey by 44 to 24 percent. DEM - Sheldon Whitehouse leads Matt Brown by 32 to 16 percent. U.S. Senate General Election Lincoln Chafee leads Sheldon Whitehouse 38 to 25 percent (up from 41 to 36 percent in June). Lincoln Chafee leads Matt Brown 41 to 18 percent (up from 44 to 29 percent in June). Sheldon Whitehouse leads Steve Laffey 35 to 25 percent (comparable to the 45 to 32 percent Whitehouse had in June) Matt Brown leads Steve Laffey 30 to 26 percent over Laffey (compared to 40 to 30 percent in June).
Keep in mind that Rhode Island's independent voters will have to choose to vote in either primary which will swing a whole lot of votes in either Primary.
Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee, the Republican incumbent, is poised to resume his own local fundraising -- after a pause -- at a Sept. 16 event being sponsored for him at the Bella Vista Restaurant, in Providence, by the NORCAL Mutual Insurance Co. The price of admission: $250. The California-based medical malpractise carrier has been in the forefront of efforts in Congress and a number of targeted states, including Rhode Island, to win passage of a "medical injury compensation reform act," known in lobbying circles as MICRA, that caps the award of "non-economic damages" in malpractice cases.
