Next Tuesday is an important primary day in NY State. I have been following several key races (Gov., Lt. Gov., State Senate, Assembly, and one Civil Court race). There are a couple of other key primaries I have not been following, so I can try adding if people want. But below are key endorsements for these key races. I pick a variety of organizations: LGBT, Choice, education, environment, Howard Dean inspired clubs, ethnic papers and organizations, reform clubs (fighting corruption within the Democratic Party), etc.

I hope this helps people make choices. Please spread the word.

I am "lucky." I am currently unemployed, so I have some time on my hands. But I also feel like everyone who spends any time posting here probably could be doing more towards winning for reform, progressive, liberal, democratic/Democratic victories in primaries and in the general election. What are you doing? Can you do more?

I am job hunting and being stay-at-home father for my son (age almost 10 and a handful with ASD but also wonderful). My main source of income is unemployment with occasional supplements from folk like you who buy from my Amazon Store, or from folk who hire me freelance for tutoring/resume writing/etc. or for science editing (D. Michaelson). I am loving spending so much time with my son, but I also am dedicating time towards advancing reform and liberal politics both locally and nationally.

Below is what I am doing. What are you doing and how can people help? Can anyone help the efforts I am pushing? Arguing meta minutiae on Daily Kos is all very well, but ultimately, we need to win elections...including primaries! We have one week to reform Albany and about 2 months to win nationally...and I am sure you have some stuff to add. So add it here. We can all help eachother. See below for what I am doing and my challenge for you to beat me.

I have been following endorsements in NY State for months now and highlighting them as they come. I was one of the first to catch the NY Times endorsement of Tim Wu. I may have gotten the following list of endorsements before some of the candidates have gotten it.

This list of endorsements comes from the New York City Chapter of Americans for Democratic Action, one of the most liberal organizations out there and I agree with all their endorsements.

Melodrama is sometimes rather irresistible. Yeah, I got sucked in from time to time. But OH MY GOD. Can we kind of refocus a bit? I mean it isn't as if reform in NY State is up for grabs in ONE WEEK!! And it isn't as if the control of the SENATE is in question. CLEARLY who uprates who, who is stalking who on the intertubes is more important than like the SENATE.

We are all people with our own quirks, biases, faults, and sensitivities. That is great and all the meta really boils down to one thing: respect each other a bit more and listen to each other a bit more. Now, can we move on to electing better and more Democrats?

First a cut to the chase, and then I will go into more detail below the fold.

Can we PLEASE focus a little on the Democratic Primary coming up in one week? Here is my Act Blue site aimed at reforming Albany: Reform Albany 2014. I will go into some detail below. But bottom line is we need money to fight the big money interests.

And then we REALLY need to focus on all the close races for November: Closest Races 2014

Seriously, winning some elections feel a lot better than endlessly arguing meta.

The NY Times has a tendency to follow fairly predictable, very mainstream, and not always progressive paths. I won't say I always DISagree with them, but we aren't always on the same page. Even though I once strongly influenced one of their endorsements (if email exchanges I was shown are accurate)...or, more to the point, strongly influenced their decision NOT to endorse in one election. And I have to say they talked to me about another election, almost directly quoted me, and never gave me credit, but that is another story...and the reason I seldom actually LINK to the NY Times.

However, in the endorsements the NY Times have made for the Sept. 9th primary in NYC, we are strongly in agreement for once. I was one of the first people around here to post that the NY Times endorsed Tim Wu for Lt. Governor. Now I can report (in not so timely a fashion) their endorsements for some other races. Since they dove tail well with an Act Blue Page I recently highlighted, I will give my comments on these races as well.

This week's book recommendation is Dream in Color: How the Sánchez Sisters Are Making History in Congress, the autobiography of Loretta and Linda Sanchez, children of immigrant parents from Mexico who became Congresswomen from California. Loretta is a Blue Dog Dem and Linda part of the Progressive Caucus. Both are brilliant and tough individuals who took on a white male dominated Congress. An excellent read.

In New York State we have had an embarrassing state government for years. Slowly, VERY slowly, things have been changing. But now is the chance to push harder than ever to clean up Albany.

NY State Senate, NY State Assembly, Lt. Gov., and, of course, Gov. All of these are critical to reforming the notorious mess that is Albany. This clogged cesspool we call Albany requires some serious snaking out, and that can only be done by supporting the reformers who have been fighting for years, defeating the corrupt scum like Malcom Smith and John Sampson, AND defeating the Republican-loving IDC members like Jeff Klein and Tony Avella. We even have the chance to defeat a Republican State Senator, Marty Golden. And let's not forget our "beloved" thug of a governor, Cuomo.

We have about 2 weeks to get all this done. Help me clean out the cesspool called Albany.

I have been keeping track of endorsements for the NYC Democratic Primary on Sept. 9th. The LGBT organizations cover the most ground in terms of number of races. There are four local LGBT organizations that I am aware of, and they are among the more influential progressive organizations in NY. These are the following: (click on each for their full endorsement lists)

Lambda Independent Democrats (my favorite of the four but covering the fewest races)

Stonewall Democrats

Empire State Pride Agenda

Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club

What interests me is how on some races these clubs agree completely and on others they are split. I want to highlight those races they are either unanimous on or three out of the four agree.

First, what candidates are unanimously supported by all four major NY LGBT organizations: (There are only four such candidates! Click on their names for more info)

AD 42 (Brooklyn) Rodneyse Bichotte (D)
AD 51 (Brooklyn) Ceasar Zuniga (D) (This is one where I disagree with them and I support Felix Ortiz, but that is just my opinion!)
AD 52 (Brooklyn) Jo Anne Simon (D) (Jo Anne is a good friend of mine so I heartily agree here)
AD 64 (Staten Island/Brooklyn) Marybeth Melendez (D)

I find it hard to argue against any of these candidates. All are endorsed by many excellent organizations. Although I DO prefer Felix Ortiz, Carlos Zuniga seems good as well.

Now let's look at cases where three out of the four agree...

I have been on the Republican mailing list for some time...so I get all sorts of crap. Including "I miss W" mug offers...if you can believe it!

Today I got an email fundraising to take the Senate. This email convinces me that the Republicans have ALREADY fumbled their chances to take the Senate. Let me show you. Here is the gist of the email:

The GOP must win six Democrat Senate seats to win a Republican Senate Majority.
Here are the top ten democrats who are the most vulnerable senators according to recent polls:

1.    Mark Pryor, Arkansas
2.    Mary Landrieu, Louisiana
3.    Kay Hagan, North Carolina
4.    Mark Begich, Alaska
5.    Mark Udall, Colorado
6.    Jeanne Shaheen, New Hampshire
7.    Al Franken, Minnesota
8.    Jeff Merkley, Oregon
9.    Mark Warner, Virginia
10.    Tom Udall, New Mexico

Sounds like they have a real shot, right? I mean they are claiming there are 10 vulnerable Dems and they only have to win 6 of those seats. Time to panic right?

Wrong. Time to do some real defense, perhaps, but their own analysis shows they have almost no chance of actually taking the Senate. Let me show you...
