Mike Herl is the polar opposite of Sarah Palin. If it were up to him, you wouldn't even know his name.
And while Palin seems to revel in saying anything that comes into her head, Herl doesn't do word spray as chairman of the Republican Party of Dane County, Wisconsin. (The county voted 73 percent for Barack Obama. Madison is the county seat.)
Madison's Isthmus newspaper set the scene on election night as Republicans watched returns come in:
(Herl) was there, all right, periodically addressing the audience from the podium. But he was not wearing a name tag and never said his name. Bill Richardson, the group's spokesman, told Isthmus the chair's name, but asked that it not be used. Other media were asked not to photograph or quote anyone without permission, expressly to prevent the negative consequences that could ensue from being exposed as a Republican.
Some may think back to John McCain as he sidestepped Hurricane Gustav to accept his party's nomination in St. Paul:
