An article just hit my in-box with the following title:
Racist query terms in Google Maps trigger the White House in results
The lede:
Google Maps lists the White House among top search results for certain queries containing racist terms against African-Americans.
Google doesn't explain how this happened, but we know enough to know the Google search rankings are based, in part, on search terms input by users, and links the users choose to click on.
It's clearly a reflection of what kinds of searches are being done--and it's clear that many of those searches use racists terms in combination with "Obama" or "White House" or something that ties it to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
