I’m not a near-term target of the Trumpists: A white man, professional, in my 60s, culturally Christian, with most of my ancestors here before the Revolution. But the near-term targets — Muslims, Mexicans, Blacks, Jews, the culturally atheist — are going to get picked off one by one over the next few years unless we all band together to stop it. It’s not enough to fantasize about hiding refugees in our basements — although we should be ready to do so. We need to find a way to stand publicly, side-by-side with those threatened.
It is surely “unrealistic” to suggest a nationwide general strike, to commence the day after the coronation, and to continue until Trump either is removed or resigns. Yet, in the best of worlds, that is what we, in solidarity, would do. America can scarcely operate if half — or even a fifth — of its workforce stays home. Nor is it illegal not to work. Is there any better alternative? What would it take to pull this off? Who is willing to lead it? Who might be willing to donate funds to support the strikers?
I’m not endorsing this idea yet, just putting it forward to see if others here see it as worthy of discussion, of filling out the details to where it’s a complete enough concept to embrace or reject rationally, and to follow up with action. If this diary drops without commendation, that’s an answer, and a fair one. Still, I’d be curious. Why not?
