After reports last week indicated that Special Counsel Robert Mueller might be close to some big moves, Donald Trump renewed his attacks on the investigation in a pair of tweets on Monday morning. In fact, Trump—or a staffer with better writing skills—managed to pack several attacks and one hilarious “defense” into those two tweets.
“When Mueller does his final report,” Trump asked, will he be covering all of his conflicts of interest in a preamble, will he be recommending action on all of the crimes of many kinds from those ‘on the other side’ (whatever happened to Podesta?), and will he be putting in statements from...” continuing on to “...hundreds of people closely involved with my campaign who never met, saw or spoke to a Russian during this period? So many campaign workers, people inside from the beginning, ask me why they have not been called (they want to be). There was NO Collusion & Mueller knows it!”
Gee, you mean not every single person on the campaign was involved in collusion with Russia? Well, that obviously means that no one was, right? To recap, though, we’ve got the attack on Mueller—a Republican—as being disqualified because of fictional conflicts of interest, we’ve got the insistence that there are nebulous “crimes of many kinds” that Trump feels should take precedence over the basic question of whether his campaign colluded with a foreign power to undermine American democracy, and then we’re on to that claim that because everyone didn’t collude there was therefore no collusion. Despite the fact that former Trump campaign foreign policy adviser George Papadopoulos is literally headed to prison today to begin a 14-day sentence stemming from the Mueller investigation.
The closer Mueller comes to wrapping up his investigation, the more attacks of this kind—and more rabid—we should expect from a fearful Trump.
