Sanders gets a question about the climate, and the threat of climate change. Talks about the threat to coastal cities, and extreme weather events. Says it’s “absurd” that we support fracking and huge subsidies to fossil fuel companies.
Biden says the first thing that he was told by the Joint Chiefs was that the single greatest threat to the country is climate change. That it drives “great migrations” and causes war. Speaks to the diseases caused by climate change and invasive species.
Biden is asked if his plan is “ambitious enough,” which of course, he says it is. Runs through the things that he has included in his plan. Provides a good list of items, including rejoining the Paris agreement, and says that the world should be moving to protect the Amazon.
Sanders says Biden’s plan is “all well and good, but nowhere near enough.” Compares the need to respond to the climate crisis as exactly the same as dealing with the coronavirus. “So we rejoin the Paris accord, that’s fine, who cares? Not a big deal.” Speaks again to having the courage to take on the fossil fuel industry.
