So last night Herman Cain showed the world how much respect he has for women by referring to former Speaker and current House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as "Princess Nancy," something he's
done in the past. He must have realized how bad it sounded to call her that, especially in light of his sexual harassment allegations, so he
quickly offered a half-assed statement of regret.
Cain’s campaign tweeted out his debate comments. But Cain himself began to walk his words back as soon as the debate was over. “That was a statement that I probably shouldn’t have made, but I was trying to make a point,” he told CNBC.
But by the time this morning rolled around, Cain decided he'd had enough with pretending that he regretted what he'd said.
"You know, I remember when Speaker Pelosi called me and the tea party people AstroTurf," he said. "I don't remember anybody asking about that story."
First of all, if Herman Cain thinks it's offensive to call a movement funded by the Koch brothers "AstroTurf" then he's just way too sensitive. Second of all, Speaker Pelosi had no idea who the heck Cain was when she made her comment. And third, it was a big press story, despite what he remembers.
(Speaking of memory, you know what the difference is between Rick Perry, Herman Cain, and Mitt Romney? Rick Perry can't remember what agency of government he wants to eliminate. Herman Cain can't remember which woman he harassed at what job. And Mitt Romney doesn't want you to remember the position he took on that issue just yesterday.)
But aside from what Cain remembers (or not) about media coverage of the AstroTurf comment, his comments raise a question: why did he apologize for his own remark?
"So you all would stop asking me about it. Ok?"
In other words, when Cain said he believed he probably shouldn't have called Speaker Pelosi "Princess Nancy," he was lying. All that he really wanted was to get the media off his back already. He's got big issues to address.
