So, this was not a difficult choice at the time. I knew I'd never run for political office myself, I've volunteered for campaigns since 1974, and there was no way. The "dialing for dollars" alone was enough to dissuade me. So, I'm in. One job introduced me to someone who got me another job, etc. Never a huge amount of money, I didn't work hard at working all the time, it was just when people would call, I'd have a day or two of work. I was just in the fetish end of the porn market, I have a little, umm...I don't look like a porn performer below the waist, and pre-Internet the niche markets for big this/small that etc. hadn't taken off. (Distribution costs for tapes and mags at that time was to "adult" stores with a little mail order to homes, if you could afford big advertising costs.)
When I gave up my chemistry job, I was already a part time telephone fantasy maker, and occasional porn performer. Someone staked me to start my own phone sex company, and at that time, the market was good. Trouble was I wasn't that good at it. Filling out 1099s and making sure I had enough advertising out there and bleach...so I got a job as a telemarketer, where I was moving into management, and the porn stuff wound up moving to S. CA. (Recent, the fetish market has come back to the City with the nice folks at www.kink.com (really, really NSFW)
I've never officially escorted or hooked. Twice, married couples I've "double dated"* have left money on the dresser, well once on the dresser, and once in my coat pocket; both were for weekend dates. And several people I've dated have bought me stuff or experiences that I could in no way afford myself. I'm over 50 now, not gray haired enough to do "grandpa" porn and dying the grey I do have makes me look like I was dipped in shoe polish. In some people's opinion, I've not been a sex worker, in that sex has never been my only source of income. I won't argue the point.
*If you're dating two other people, as a threesome, that's a "double date" right?
