The Republican tax bill is still very unpopular. Make that, it was never popular, and its numbers keep dropping. According to a new CNN poll—which also finds Donald Trump at his lowest approval yet:
Opposition to the bill has grown 10 points since early November, and 55% now oppose it. Just 33% say they favor the GOP's proposals to reform the nation's tax code.
Two-thirds see the bill as doing more to benefit the wealthy than the middle class (66%, vs. 27% who say it'll do more to benefit the middle class) and almost four in 10 (37%) say that if the bill becomes law, their own family will be worse off. That's grown five points since early November. Just 21% say they'll be better off if the bill becomes law.
And let’s face it, at least some of that 21 percent is being overly optimistic.
But Republicans are hell-bent on passing this thing … and in fact, that whole “benefit the wealthy” thing is part of the motivation. They’re helping their donors. They’re helping themselves, given the number of millionaires in Congress. So public opinion and public opposition is not going to stop the vast majority of Republicans from voting for this thing. The only question is if voters can convince just enough vulnerable Republicans to think about November 2018 or even November 2020.
