Democrats won HUGE in New Mexico this week and made several historic firsts for women and people of color.
Three term congresswoman Michelle Lujan-Grisham, who led the Hispanic Caucus in the House of Reps, was elected governor. She is the second Latina governor in US history, right after New Mexico’s current governor, Republican Susana Martinez. This is the first time a state has elected back to back women governors.
New Mexico Dems won the US Senate and all the House seats as well. The nail biter was watching the race in southern New Mexico, where the seat had been held by a Republican.
Xochitl Torres Small, a water rights attorney and granddaughter of farm workers, refused to concede the race on election night because 8,000 absentee ballots had not been counted. Thank god she believed in counting all votes because she WON that seat.
Deb Haaland will be the first Native women to be elected to Congress, representing the district that Michelle Lujan-Grisham had represented (which includes Albuquerque).
New Mexico will be the first state to send ALL PEOPLE OF COLOR to the US House of Representatives.
Dems also won the Attorney General, Secretary of State, Supreme Court justice, and several judgeships.
NM Dems also swept the state legislature, electing Muslim community activist and clean energy engineer Abbas Akhil to the state house of reps.
